Additional Comments: I'm not sure if you all have gotten a call like this.., I get a lot of teller markers ( especially at dinner time! Anyway, what I've been doing now is picking up and finding out where there from, name and to remove me from their list.. Anyway, this lady on the phone was from Soap Opera Digest. She wanted to know if I wanted to renew my magazine with them. I told her no, that I watched AMC and since it's been cancelled I don't want it anymore and to please take me off list. Well, she would not let me go.. she kept saying I can give you a great price and she went on and on.. When I told her no, thanks for the what 5th time and told her please take me off list she mumbled something and hung up on me! How rude! I know she needs to sell these magazines but they really need to understand ( at least in my case). I only watched AMC and I also bought that magazine ( from a friend's daughter) to give her credit for girl scout troop, sorry to vent but I feel so much better! Lol

Having worked in phone rooms before & trying to get people to donate to non-profits, I can tell you that a lot of phone room managers insist on the phone room staff not taking one or two 'no's' as acceptable answers.  If they know that you subscribed/gave before, then you are considered a strong, proven lead, so they will try every way possible to get you to re-sign.  I'm glad I'm not doing that work in this economy.

I've also been one of those who has said that I am not interested in re-subscribing to magazines or the newspaper.  Personally, I've always felt (even when I was doing the calling) that one 'no' was sufficient & trying for two 'nos' should be optional.  I didn't find getting two 'no' answers very productive.

There are ways of opting out of getting calls, which can minimize those you receive.  When I was calling it was illegal for us to call, even interested parties, on a cell.

  • So you're saying even though the only reason someone subscribed to the magazine no longer exists the caller should pursue?? This isn't the norm. If the subscriber only watched AMC and AMC is now gone it's like another telemarketer calling about a certain disease that may have been in the family. The person says everyone has been cured yet they don't take no for an answer. Even you have to see how absurd this argument is. Don't watch ANY soaps yet they insist you get a deal on a magazine that has nothing to offer you. UNREAL!!!

I don't answer any number I don't recognize, there should be a law that they can not call on your cell phone. That is the only phone I have and why should I waste my minutes listening to unwanted calls? It really irritates me!

A charity to whom I had given money the year before called me to ask if I would match what I gave.  I didn't want to give to them so I said I couldn't commit and the woman went on and on non-stop.  Finally, I said that I had the money last year but didn't have it this year so maybe she could send ME something.  She hung up LOL.

  • I like that one, MM. Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where a telemarketer was trying to sell him something and wouldn't give up. Jerry asked for his home phone number so he could call him at home during dinner! I've been tempted to try that myself. But always, when someone won't take no for an answer, I hang up. I would never do that to anyone else, but a telemarketer who is being persistent to the point of rudeness deserves no more. /SheilaT

Hard sell tactics are just plain rude. You're perfectly justified in hanging up on a pushy, ill-mannered, obnoxiously persistent pest like that. And don't feel guilty. In her line of work she's probably used to rejection by now!

I hear you, Angela.  I have learned to hang up on people like that even in the middle of a sentence, if they refuse to get the message that I am DONE TALKING.
