At the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Ricky Gervais is back to destroy (heh) host. He reads rules he was given by the Hollywood Foreign Press that if he doesn't follow them he WILL be invited back. An International Turkish actress is introduced (didn't catch her name). she says the Golden Globes air in 199 countries then says Peace at home and peace in the world.

Kate Beckinsale & Seth Rogen: he says he's concealing a massive erection!! Best Actress Motion Picture Comedy or Musical - Michelle Williams - MY WEEK WITH MARILYN. Wonderful tribute to her (and Heath Ledger's) daughter. She thanks the HFP as Marilyn won the same award 50 years ago.

Sarah Michelle Gellar & Piper Pirabo: Best Supporting Actor Mini-Series TV movie - (as Eric Stonestreet's name is called Jesse Tyler Ferguson holds up a card that says whatever) - Peter Dinklage - GAME OF THRONES. She had a few glasses of wine and wondered why she was only in one movie with Morgan - RED. She then introduced many clips that she is not in. Morgan gave a lovely speech saying 'if you do what you love you will never work a day in your life.' Honored he was considered worthy.

Colin Firth: Ricky 1/2 way in the bag tells the audience that Colin is racist and he saw him punch a blind kitten. Colin talks about protesters outside 'but we have Ricky.' Best Actress Motion Picture/Drama - Meryl Streep - THE IRON LADY. We can say it each time but this really is the best performance she's ever given (imo). She tries for humor but admits she's not good at it. She rambles a bit as only she can and then the music starts and she says oh no (I'd listen to the iron lady conductor). Tells fellow nominee Viola Davis she loves her. Thanks her agent and God - Harvey Weinstein.

Queen Latifah: introduces clips nominated movie - THE HELP.

Jane Fonda: Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical - The Artist - well deserved and then some. (the dog!!)

Natalie Portman: Ricky says she won this and an Oscar last year and then nothing this year because she had a baby. Who puts family first? Best Actor Motion Picture/Drama - George Clooney- THE DESCENDANTS. Praises pal Brad Pitt's acting and humanitarian work.

Harrison Ford: Best Motion Picture/Drama - The Descendants.

...and that's all folks. Ricky was very funny and I feel he pulled it back a little which I didn't expect him to do. Read a number of articles since last year. Let's see what he does next year. Tonight? He's sleeping it off.

I didn't watch the GGs but thought I'd weigh in here with my own reviews of some of the movies of 2011 in case anyone might be interested in seeing any of them:

The Help - very entertaining, some great acting

The Ides of March - anything with Clooney is worth seeing; he is very good at choosing material.

J. Edgar - aside from the cheesy aging makeup, it was very good. But this kind of movie (like Frost/Nixon) is an acquired taste and not for everyone.

Midnight in Paris - another fun Woody Allen romp. Reminded me of The Purple Rose of Cairo. The actor (Tom Hiddleston) with whom I had my scenes in The Avengers is in this film (as F. Scott Fitzgerald) as well as War Horse (I think he plays a general or military officer).

The Descendants - another fine GC vehicle, really shows his acting range in this picture.

Hugo - fun and unique, cute story. See it in 3D.

The Artist - something completely different. Superb acting all around. A take-off on films of the 20s & 30s -- Nick & Nora meets Fred & Ginger on Sunset Boulevard. Shot entirely in black & white, almost completely silent. I'm amazed this film ever got made in this day and age. Wow!

(Mr. Ingy also saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but I opted out)

Next on our list:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

W.E.

The Iron Lady

I've heard good things about War Horse but I'm going to skip it. I know myself -- I'd be a nervous wreck worrying about the horse the whole time.

  • All the reviews say the same about the J Edgar make-up and that otherwise it's good. I agree completely about The Artist - fabulous. Meryl goes above and beyond in The iron lady and I loved 'how' the story was told - that, imo, won her the GG and will win her the Oscar. I keep checking for a release date of YOUR movie. eom/WE
  • It's scheduled for May 4th. It will be out in 2D and 3 D. Can't wait to see if I'm on the screen or the cutting room floor. ; ) ~i&b

Sometimes I think Clooney and Streep are picked just because of who they are.  If it's a hard catagory the voters just say oh too hard to pick, let's just go with them.  Think other actors were overlooked as usual.

  • If you saw either of their movies I don't think you'd say this. Each stepped it up moreso than they ever have. JMO. eom/WE

I had to look up Beginners because it sounded familiar.  Turns out yes, I saw it many months ago and loved it!  Another movie with a wonderful dog in it.  Those of you who haven't seen it, rent/download it ASAP!

  • I actually closed my eyes and held my breath in that category hoping they'd say the name we heard. What a lovely statement about his wife. Sigh. eom/WE

I didn't get to watch so thank you W.E. for your wonderful recap, makes me feel like I saw it (almost)! Sorry I missed Morgan Freeman's speech, I really like him.

Question - did Matt LeBlanc win for his portrayal of himself in the Showtime original series "Episodes?" I just happened to come across that while I was on vacation and watched the whole first season, it was cute. Do you know if it will be coming back for a second season?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Matt plays himself only to a degree. All of the personal stuff is incorrect and written and he's in a committed relationship but the show has him single. I watch for a return but no word yet. Sure hope it comes back - love the Brit couple. eom/WE
  • Well, okay, he plays a character named Matt LeBlanc, I figured he wasn't actually playing himself lol. I enjoyed the show too, love Shawn and 'Betsy!' :) //Wendi
  • Great news W.E. - Episodes has been picked up for a second season! No word on the date or how many episodes, but it will be back! (Now I have to update my answer to vg's google question, since of course I used google to find that out!) //Wendi
  • Cool. Actually Matt LeBlanc said it's up to the audience to figure out (decide) what's him and what isn't (lol). eom/WE

I love Meryl Streep but was so disappointed for Viola Davis.  I haven't seen Streep's Thatcher but she better be fantastic to beat Viola, who made me so emotional.  I hope the Oscars see it differently. JMO

Most beautiful and best dressed....Michelle Pfieffer. Stunning. Always.

  • There is one thing about The Iron Lady that you don't see in the trailers. That, imo, is what won for Meryl. No one can do better and should just hope their time is a year without Meryl. If Viola wins Oscar I won't be unhappy but it's another Meryl year. eom/WE

Thank you W.E. for your recap - always so well done.  I love Ricky Gervais; I saw an episode a few years back of The Office on the BBC and it was hilarious, better than the one over here.  These things can be a drag to watch when they take themselves too seriously.   A lot of the TV shows I have not seen, although I have heard good things about them.

I am anxious to see Iron Lady and the Artist before the Oscars; also the Descendants.  Meryl Streep is always so gracious and lovely in her demeanor - a true living legend IMO.  I was torn between her and Viola Davis, who was also wonderful in The Help.  I remember their scene together in Doubt a few years back and how impressed I was by Viola.  Loved that Octavia Spencer won.

As far as fashion goes, a lot of the ladies looked beautiful and some of the gowns were amazing, but my jaw dropped when I saw Angelina Jolie who looked positively spectacular.  The gown, makeup, hair - everything was perfect.

The show itself is so much more fun than the Oscars, which I often find dull and tedious.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I also want to add I cannot believe Jane Fonda is 75! She looked fabulous! eom Sierra
  • Sierra, I SO agree about Streep and Davis together in Doubt: two great actors together doing their thing brilliantly! Help was excellent; can't wait to see Iron Lady. /SheilaT
  • I never miss any of Gervais' shows. The Office, Extras - all great entertainment. I watch most of the TV mini-series and was pleasantly surprised for some wins and others (Luther, Homeland) knew they'd take the prize. Meryl wrote a small article of praise for Viola in Entertainment Weekly even knowing they'd go up against each other. Doubt was so nicely done and well cast - Phillip Seymour Hoffman, their co-star, is another who wins almost each time he gets a nod. Angie in white? Nice to see.I agree about the Oscars, although I'd never miss them but my fav is still coming up - the SAG Awards. eom/WE

Well, as often happens, I totally forgot the GG Awards!  I'm so glad you did your usual excellent recap (I can find fashion stuff elsewhere online).

Yes, the dog in The Artist was fantastic!  It was a delightful movie as well.  I kinda wanted Midnight in Paris to win though . . . also charming but in addition it had all those Parisian scenes.

The Descendants was also a worthy movie, but I preferred Ides of March and Money Ball.  Just a matter of personal preference.

Thanks so much, WE, for making me almost feel like I saw the show last night!

  • I'm very happy Woody won - wish he was there. Glad you said that about Ides. I haven't seen it yet. Mostly good reviews and some iffy. Will see more before the SAGS and, of course, Oscar. So many of my favs won. LeBlanc and Grammar's shoiws are great and Homeland is tops.eom/WE

Fabulous recap, as always. Thanks, W.E.

It was a really good show. I watched the pre-show as well and there was lots of excitement. You could feel the buzz right through the screen. There were some lovely gowns ... lots of texture this year. I thought Jane Fonda looked stunning. I liked Ricky much better this year ... he was tamer. He completely turned me off last year. Morgan was great. So humble. Such a gentleman. So touched by Sidney Poitier's speech. Another beautiful, humble gentleman. I haven't seen The Descendants yet. We're seeing War Horse tomorrow.

  • Ricky definitely was tamer. I don't usually watch the pre-show and am too busy wring during the show to notice most fashions. eom/WE
