Additional Comments: .....and I haven't even started it yet. Today is the first day of my visual arts class. I made a copy of the sylabus and now am wondering what I just got myself into. Yes, you would think since I am an artist this would be easy. The teacher is going to want us to visit the art museum of Chicago or other places that are not nearby more than once so we can write a paper on a piece of art. I am in the suburbs of Chicago so going downtown is a real pain, you have to take the train, and mueseums are expensive and people like me work and have other classes. We are not allowed to use the internet for information on the paper. Even if I went to the museum how am I supposed to remember all the details of the artwork I chose to do my paper on? This is more like an extra credit type of assignment. Has anybody ever heard of this? We have a sculpture on the mantle my uncle bought from Africa. Maybe I can do a paper on that.
Thanks for letting me rant. I'll let you know how it goes tonight. Maybe it's not as bad as it looks.

keep an open mind... don't put up road blocks where there are none... try to refrain from being resistant... isn't that what an artist is...

Look at the trip to the museum as an adventure... not a hard task... your school may have discounted tickets for students or the museum may offer a discount if you show your school ID.  they may sell postcards of the works in their gift shop...

you may think you are a great portrait artist now... take the class, take in all you can to learn about portraits and everything else, I'd be curious to see what you think of your style in another 6 months... you may also find that you can appreciate other art in a way you don't know... you may find something else you enjoy as much as portraits...

enjoy... Free your mind!  ; )   ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  good luck!  Rome wasn't built in a day!

  • Great advice Kris. Miss B another thing, maybe if you do go to the museum you can take a tape recorder and record what see. You can do this with or without taking notes. Also if you go with someone else you may be able to use their input in your report. iziou see

Don't give up this early in the class, you can do it and put it behind you.  Think of the accomplishment of getting it done and you can truly say 'Been there, done that'.  Good luck!

Okay, I just had my class today. First let me tell you this classroom is huge, actually it's a theater. It's designed like a movie theater they do plays there too. It has a stage and everything. Anyway, about the paper we can either do it on a piece of art we have seen in person or we can do it on one of the films she assigned. That makes it a little easier since the first paper is due in just two weeks.
Class was interesting. At first I didn't like it because we had to look at some art that I was not really into. I am not wild about abstract art which we had to look at.Then we got to looking at some portraits from the reinessance times.Portraits are my thing. I was able to tell them what I thought about it.

So, I'm going to get my paper started soon. I'll probably do it on one of the assigned films. I would still like to visit the art museum downtown Chicago. My mom said she will go with me.

  • I've often found that looking at the syllabus for a class, especially an Art class can be daunting but once you get INTO it, it's not as bad as it seems. It's kinda like opening an Algebra book and seeing all the complex formulas that look so....well, GREEK, and then when you actually get to it, find that it's really easy. LOL, probably a bad example for you, I remember you don't like Algebra (which I love)... but yeah, I remember Art classes that required similar too. Let me tell you that helping my daughter with Government (which I HATE) and some of her projects for that class has turned my brain to mush... Glad she finished that, now on to Economics (not that I like that any better). Can't believe she will be graduating in just a few months -- at 16. /Gma b@s
  • Miss B, I'm afraid you will have to look at a lot of art you don't like in order to earn your degree. Even if you're not crazy about a particular genre, try to find things you like about the individual works (such as use of color, brush technique, or whatever). It will help you get through it. ~i&b
  • An art degree is my goal I decided. I think I would like to teach a drawing class. You're right, I'm going to have to look at a lot of work I don't like.
  • Miss B - I'm happy to hear the class isn't as daunting as you first thought. Just take it one class at a time and I'm sure you'll be fine. I have ALWAYS wanted to visit Chicago and their art museums so consider yourself lucky - especially that your mom is willing to go with you. ~gg
  • Yes I am lucky, Chicago is only a train ride away from me. It's not that it is far it's that it's a pain to get there because you have to wait for the train and hope it comes on time and finding your way around the city can be challenging. I've been to all the museums downtown. I recommend visiting.-Miss.B
  • Welcome, to college, Miss B! You will learn about all kinds of art different from your own style, any many you will come to appreciate!! I envy you!!! ///Isis
  • Miss B. my Bob is an art teacher. In college he did a lot w/ pottery and absolutely loved that the most. He currently teaches 5th and 6th graders. He teaches them everything from water color, landscapes, portraits, 2 point perspective, pastels, pottery, murals and much much more. I'd suspect unless you taught a private class and could make a living from that, a well rounded education is what you will need for any future job in the art field. Keep at it... good luck - kris
  • Thank you Kris, good advice. I was thinking of teaching drawing and painting for college students. That is something I would love to do. I know it will take a long time to do but that would be my goal.

I'm with i&b. .  .the Art Institute is a fantastic place to spend a few hours.  I remember going there many times when we lived in Chicago, and taking our son when he was in first grade.

Of course I never went there with an assignment  to prepare; it was all for fun and personal fulfillment.  I hope you start by going to the website and taking notes of what piece(s) you want to see and what characteristics of those pieces you want to check out.  Then, when you get to the Art Institute, you will be prepared and won't waste time trying to decide what you want to accomplish there.   Good luck!

If it's really that difficult for you to get to the museum in person, I'd just visit their website.  The photos are such high quality that you can really see some good detail.  Of course, seeing the works in person is always much more preferable because you can judge the scale, compare works to each other, etc.  The Art Institute is a fantastic place, I would spend an entire month there!

If you go to the museum are you allowed to take a picture of the object with your cell? That would help. I bet you will do fine, just take a deep breath and relax.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I think the museum allows us to take pics on our phone but it's just going to be hard to get all the detail and write about it, you know what I mean? It isn't like looking at a live piece of art.
  • Some museums allow non-flash photography, others don't allow any photos at all. Watch for signs telling you whether or not photography is allowed and whether flash is prohibited. ~i&b
  • I was thinking the same thing about taking pictures with your cell phone. Miss B, take the pictures, and take notes about the photo at the same time. If you can't use the internet, go to your local library and don't forget to get all or any of the free literature that the museum has of the works on display. Also before you take your trip, read up on some of the work you will be viewing. The more you know about it before you look at it may make it easier for you to remember, understand and discuss in your assignments. izi
  • Great advice, she actually said if we go to the museum to take the free literature about the artwork. They don't always let you take a picture. She realizes that going downtown may be a lot for some people. We're in the suburbs so it's a little bit of a travel. If I am able to I will visit the museum. It's something I would like to do anyway.
