Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your weekend! I just got back from the park with the kids, spent 3 hours there.. It was 60 degrees out today..can't ask for anything better...I am truly blessed..anyway..

I am making a doctor's appt soon for my yearly check up and I was thinking to also reach out to find out from my friends here if they know anything about vitamins that would be suitable for me and I would take that advice to my doctor's office. I am concerned about what vitamins I should take..to give you a brief run down of me..I am 44, I am 5 foot 6, I weigh 135/140. I am concerned b/c I am getting older and should be taking vitamins.  I take a mulit vitamin everyday and maybe others as well?   I was told that there are vitamins with high Antioxidants that are really good to take. I was told that Ginkgo Biloba with Vinpocetine is good. I do not like fish ( I wish I did) I don't like the fishy taste. If there was a fish that did not taste that way I would eat it and then I would avoid taking these vitamins? I was told fish has high antioxidants? I am so confused on what I should take. Any advice I would greatly appreciate! sorry to go on and on..thank you so much..xoxoxo

I think it's best to get vitamins and minerals from foods, but I do take a multivitamin (Centrum). I also take Citracal for calcium and vitamin D. I eat a mostly vegan diet, although I do eat cage-free eggs. I won't eat anything that comes from a factory-farmed animal.

i too worry about Alzheimer's since my mom has it and it runs in her family. I have also been a health nut since I found out I was pregnant 4 years ago. I have researched many vitamins and their potential effects and uses.

From what i have found and read on various websites, the combination of two vitamins could possibly significantly help in preventing and or reducing the effects of cognitive dysfunction. They are both antioxidants. One is

Alpha Lipoic Acid and the other is Acetyl L Carnatine. Remember to take the proper doses as well. With some of these types of vitamins the recommended dosage may be 1200 mg. but the pills are say 600mg a piece. This would obviously mean that if you're only taking one a day, it may not be helping. the dose also affects how you purchase your vitamins if you get a bottle of 200 mg pills and you need 800mg per day, then you're gonna be out in a month.

I found a terrific site only with prices better than any drugstore. I have found them to be very reputable over the years. It's called iherb.com. They have vitamins and all kinds of natural stuff.

Hope any of that helped!!Good luck let us know what the doc says!

I don't take many vitamins but I should.  Being female, you might need iron.   I've always been slightly anemic and have taken iron pills from time to time over the years.  A couple years ago my feet were constantly swollen.  Dr sent me iron pills and I did some research and though you really have to dig, iron deficiency can result in swollen feet... within 4 days of taking the iron, my feet stopped swelling.  Women, especially those still getting their monthly visit from auntie Flo, tend to be deficient in iron.

Another vitamin that I've found to be deficient in is Vitamin B-12.   I think they have something to do with stress and energy...

Hi Angela!  I know what you mean . . .I'm a little confused about taking vitamins.

I've taken a multivitamin daily for more years than I can count. I also eat a wide variety of the foods know to be high in antioxidants (like berries, nuts, etc).  But the last time I saw my doc (been going to him for about 10 years) he recommended I stop taking the multis because my diet is healthy enough that I might actually be overdosing on some of the vitamins, and especially minerals.  Instead, he recommended I just take Vitamin A and Calcium, which I'd been taking along with my multi.

So for the past couple of months I've been following his recommendation, but that big bottle of vitamins in my cabinet stares me in the face, making me wonder:  am I missing some nutrient?  After all, my diet has been healthy since I joined WW seven years ago, but my veggie intake is still kind of limited.  I eat enough of them, but not varied. There are plenty that I haven't had probably once a year!

You're over 20 years younger than I so I'm sure our needs are somewhat different.   Hope your visit to your doctor helps you make your decision!

  • Thanks SheilaT for all your helpeful information! I am so concerned that I may one day get what my mom got (Demetia/Alzheimer's). I try so hard to stay active and eat right..especially after losing all the weight I did..thanks again SheilaT!!../Angela
  • Angela, my dad had Alzheimers as well, so I'm also concerned about it. Let's hope we're both doing all the right things. /SheilaT

Hi, Angela,my doctor gives me tests for the basics: such as blood pressure, thyroid, diabetes (blood glucose test), cholesterol, vitamin deficiency, urine test, EKG monitor. I think that he covers the basic stuff. If you have a good doctor, then you should not have to worry about vitamins.

  • Thanks Holly! I just switched doctors right after Thanksgiving..a friend of mine recommended her and I plan on making an appt. and I will make sure during my visit she takes those tests..I will see what she does first..thanks again..I appreciate your help../Angela
  • Angela, I forgot to mention that my doctor made sure that I had a bone density test and a test for Vitamin D (which I think is related to osteoporosis, a common problem for women). You are younger than I am so that could make a difference in the tests that are recommended for you. Holly

I'm 68 and I take a senior multi-vitamin and Calcium plus D every day.  My doctor told me to take fish oil but I never did, although she told me that putting them in the freezer will keep you from getting the fish taste.  '

I think, at your age, I would just research what vitamins are in food.  It's a lot more fun to each fruit, nuts and grain, and dark green veggies, than to put a bunch of pills into your system every day.  Mitch is right--your body will take what it needs and get rid of the rest.  Recently I read that kale is probably the most nutritious of all vegetables, although even onions are good for you.  Peppers of any kind are also really powerful.

  • Thanks CaroleA..I enjoy and eat alot all of those foods weekly. I have always enjoyed grains, nuts, veggies. I heard lots of colors in your foods are good and all have it's purpose?..(example..red peppers, blueberries, raspberries, green beans, etc..)..Thanks again for all your helpful information.../Angela
  • I second CaroleA's advice about calcium and vitamin D. Now's the time to start preventing osteoporosis. /Kenara

Angela, as far as I'm concerned, there are two reasons for taking vitamins, maintenance and therapeutic.  A single multi-vitamin is fine for maintenance and your doctor will tell you if he suspects a vitamin deficiency.

Having said that, most doctors agree there is a Vitamin D deficiency epidemic.  I'd ask him how he feels about that.

Otherwise, unless you have some unusual condition where vitamins and minerals start building up in your body, your body just takes the vitamins it needs and excretes the rest.  (This reminds me, in addition to vitamins, also discuss minerals with your doctor.)
