Additional Comments: I saw the movie - Albert Nobbs - and I thought that it was really good. The reviews for the movie are not very good.

I really enjoyed watching this movie. I have to say that it is kind of a feminist movie so maybe it is not that appealing to men.

The song by Sinead O'Connor is wonderful.

I base watching movies on whether I like the actors, think the trailers look interesting or if the subject matter appeals to me.

A movie that I liked very much was Evita with Madonna.  I'm not a Madonna fan but thought she did a good job.  It was panned by the critics.

Two movies I didn't get that were raved about by critics were Heath Ledger's last movie Dr. Parn...something or other, and The Incredible Lightness of Being.

I think everyone does.  When I want to see a picture I do, regardless of the critics or others opinions.  On the other hand, I like movies that I know are not that great but I like them.  Some years back the critics were raving over a picture called Pulp Fiction which I thought was awful yet it was winning all kinds of awards and accolades.  I hated Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men, both Best Picture winners and hailed by most critics.   So taste is very subjective.  I also agree with critics a lot depending.  I intend to see Albert Nobbs because it looks interesting and Glenn Close and Janet McTeer are nominated for their performances.  It looked good when they showed clips of it.   I only read two reviews and they were both positive.

OF COURSE!  I usually make my own decisions about movies based on if I like the actors, if the story appeals to me, the location appeals to me, those types of things.  very rarely have I watched a movie that was solely based on what critics say... who are they?  They don't know my taste.

for instance, I am fascinated by all things English... I can't wait to see WE.  I am NOT a Madonna fan.  I don't care what the critics say... their story has always fascinated me so I will definitely be seeing this movie when I can.

I've not read anything about the movie you mentioned... but the pix I've seen or the clips, w/ the women portraying creeps me out personally so I probably wouldn't go see it.  But I came to that conclusion on my own... even if it wins tons of awards, I still would make my own decision.  maybe if I read up more on it, I might change my mind.

  • oops, meant to say, the women portraying MEN - kris
  • Krisa, I am interested in seeing the movie about W.E. and I am not a Madonna fan either. It looks good based on the previews. Regarding Albert Nobbs. the women have to dress as men to survive in a harsh environment. I think that it is really a good movie and I'm glad that it was nominated for Academy Awards. Holly

    In my opinion..

I remember seeing Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford. I thought it was a great movie..I laughed, cried and felt how a family can change from such an experience..and my friend told me it only got 2 stars? If that's the case I totally disagree with that. I really only see movie's on TV not in the movie theater.

  • I know what you mean, Angela. I hardly ever go to the theater. I like Harrison Ford but I don't think that I saw that movie. I am way behind on the movies. Usually I wait for them to come out on DVD. Holly

I even disagree (after seeing a movie) with some critics that I trust. I've learned to read them, now, knowing more about their style and take it from there. Also in Entertainment Weekly they print the numbers (A+ to the lowest) of many reviewers so I judge by that if it's iffy.

Still if I want to see a movie, regardless, I'll see it then judge for myself. Many times I've loved what they hated but more often than not I agree for the most part. I make my own review!!

  • W.E., the reason why I went to see this movie is because of the Academy Award nominations. I do pay attention to the movie reviews because I don't want to waste my time and money watching a bad movie. Sometimes the movie critics are right on target but not always. Holly

Holly, I saw Albert Nobbs yesterday and I loved it.  It moved very slowly but I wasn't bored at all . . . it was as if I was reading a really good novel with that lovely pace.

I also disagreed with the critics about The Black Swan.  I didn't think it was that great.  The story and the acting were IMO like a soap . . . nothing against soaps (I miss my stories!) but it just seemed cheesy, and I didn't know these people well enough to care about them as I do Erica, Adam, Tad, Amanda, etc.

Even movie critics disagree with movie critics.  Siskel & Ebert used to argue about films all the time.  ; )
