Additional Comments:

The beginning is fun depending on who tells the tale of how they started and got their SAG card...! Tonight is all about actors praising actors. No producers, directors, sound...just actors.

Michelle Williams: Outstanding Male Actor Supporting Role - Christopher Plummer (yes) for Beginners. He's so eloquent as he describes acting as the second oldest profession. Thanks Ewan McGregor and his daughter - Amanda (another nutty actor) and his wife who rescued him and saved his life.

George Clooney & Shailene Woodley: intro their nominated movie THE DESCENDANTS.

Don Cheadle: Outstanding Actor Female Supporting Role - Octavia Spencer, THE HELP.

Julianna Margulies & Bryan Cranston: Outstanding Male Actor Comedy Series - Alec Baldwin, 30 ROCK.

Regina King & Kyle Chandler: Outstanding Female Actor Comedy Series - Betty White, HOT IN CLEVELAND. She praises and shares this with Valerie Bertinelli, Wendi Malick and Jane Leeves. She says they can't keep it but they can see it.

Jessica Chastain: praises SAG branches in major cities and we see clips from famous movies.

Kyra Sedgewick & Kevin Bacon: Outstanding Ensemble Cast - Comedy Series - Modern Family - the kids do the thank yous.

Glenn Close & Kenneth Brannaugh: Outstanding Female Actor TV Movie or Mini Series - Kate Winslet , MILDRED PEARCE. (not in attendance).

Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone & Viola Davis: intro their nominated movie THE HELP

Zoe Saldana & Armie Hammer: Outstanding Male Actor TV Movie or Mini Series - Paul Giamatti, TOO BIG TO FAIL. (not in attendance).

Ken Howard: President of SAG. It's the 18th year and the show is broadcast to our armed forces around the globe. He introduces Roberta Reardon as he announces that SAG and AFTRA are very close to a merge - it's in the hands of the members (actors).

Maya Rudolph, Kristin Wiig & Melissa McCarthy: they bring their drinks with them as they played a drinking game on set of their film. Tonight they say to drink each time you hear the name SCORSESE to which Melissa guzzles what seems a bottle of vodka (lol). They say the name a few times and she guzzles then...intro their nominated movie BRIDESMAIDS.

Dick Van Dyke: he gets a standing ovation and humbly says he's there as a presenter - Life Achievement Award to Mary Tyler Moore: He says he loves her and always has as he saw her first. We see clips of her childhood and rise to fame from The Dick Van Dyke Show to The Mary Tyler Moore Show to feature films. She is AT the podium when the clips end. Some feel due to her diabetes she may be losing her sight (hope not) but after she spoke about her name being Mary Moore and there already was one in the union she was told to change it. That wouldn't be fair to her father - George Tyler Moore. Her middle name was Ty;er and she said it aloud...Mary Tyler Moore and that was all she needed to do. Then it was odd. She seemed to finish but stood there. Dick came over and kissed her cheek then both had an awkward second or two. If something was wrong I wish TPTB handled it better. Love her!

Judy Greer & Ed Helms: Outstanding Female Actor Drama Series _ Jessica Lange, AMERICAN HORROR STORY.

Jean Dujardin & Bérénice Bejo: intro their nominated movie THE ARTIST.

Tina Fey & John Krasinsky: Outstanding Male Actor Drama Series - Steve Buscemi. Brings his drink and Tina holds it for him. He says Scorsese and she chuggs it. He gives his thanks then recognizes all the characters/actors killed off this season and asks the fans of Michael Pitt to stop yelling at him on the street. Hilare.

Meryl Streep: IN MEMORIUM - so many greats lost this year.

Linda Grey, Larry Hagman & Patrick Duffy: Outstanding cast Drama Series - Boardwalk Empire: Steve hoists all the kids in the air and gives thanks for he cast.

Kathy Bates & Owen Wilson: intro their nominated movie MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.

Natalie Portman: Outstanding Male Actor Leading Role - Jean Dujardin, THE ARTIST.

Ben Kingsley: Outstanding Female Actor Leading Role - Viola Davis, THE HELP. She gives a lovely speech. At 8 she decided to be an actress and saw the beautiful face of Cicily Tyson. Then in high school the beautiful face of Meryl Streep.

Brad Pitt: Outstanding Cast Of A Motion Picture - THE HELP.

Now we wait and compare as we move on towards Oscar (February 26th).

  • Wonderful that they both won. The Oscars will be tough as most of the top categories all nominated, imo, deserve to win. eom/WE

Thanks for the wonderful recap. I had to go out so I only caught the first hour or so.

I found the whole Mary Tyler Moore thing to be so odd. I mean, of all the things to say, she talks about her name? She didn't even thank Dick. I love her but I have to wonder about her mind.

I took your list of Oscar movies you posted above and have been trying to see them but haven't gotten very far. I hope to have them all done by Oscar night.

  • There are so many conflicting reports about Mary. I'm sure there will be an article soon. I'm going through that list, too. Right now I've seen more performances than nominated movies but I'll try to see all of those as well. eom/WE

Great recap W.E.  I was pleasantly surprised over Dujardin's win and Viola Davis.  I thought Meryl would be a slam dunk for the Oscar but maybe there will be a real race for this.  I am torn between them as they are both magnificent.  The other winners were expected.  Thanks again.

  • The thing about the race for female lead Oscar is they are both magnificent and their characters couldn't be more different. I wouldn't want that choice - too hard. eom/WE

Another awards show that I missed!  We have gotten to be such old fogeys.  Our Sunday evenings, from 7pm on, are spent listening to The Big Broadcast, a radio show on our local public radio station (also available online, if you're interested - WAMU.org) that airs great and not so great (LOL) shows from mostly the 1940s and 1950s.   The ones we really enjoy are Dragnet  and Gunsmoke.  We kind of forget about television after the evening gets started.

But thanks for the recap, WE . . . between you and the clips this morning, I feel like I almost saw the SAG awards show!

  • Hey more power to ya - those shows sound great. Not into just listening myself (lol). The SAGS are great because there's nothing else but the actors and the show is quick. eom/WE
  • We got into listening on Sunday evenings during the one hour drive back home (out in the sticks) from a day spent with the extended family in or near DC. After a while we found we didn't want to miss 'Old Time Radio Hour(s)' so we'd listen even if we were at home. Habit! /SheilaT
  • BTW, I'm thrilled about just about all the winners! /SheilaT
  • me too for the most part. A couple had me wondering. eom/WE
  • There is a network called the Antenna Network that aires great old shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Father Knows Best, Gidget, The Jack Benny Program and others. MM
  • Great channel - I watch it all the time. eom/WE

Those Bridesmaids ladies are just too funny.

Michael Pitt didn't look that happy on stage with the cast of Boardwalk Empire.

It seems that MTM was a little unsteady.  What a beautiful actress.

American Horror Story's J. Lange shined in every scene she was in.

Yay for The Help! Octavia and Viola's dresses so lovely.

I am sorry for saying it, but I just cannot stand Alec Baldwin.  30 Rock is probably a great show but I just don't want to watch anything he's in. JMO

  • The Help's Bryce Dallas Howard just had a baby girl a couple of weeks ago. Eve
  • All three Bridesmaid ladies are a hoot especially Melissa. Michael Pitt always looks that way (lol). It's been mentioned that maybe MTM is losing her sight due to diabetes - a shame. Never saw AHS. Loved it when Viola said she and Octavia were turning into Abileen and Minny! I do like Baldwin but that many times in a row? Ty Burell is consistantly funny each week as is Eric Stonestreet.eom/WE
  • Even Jon Cryer....consistently great performance with bozo material. Eve
