Topic: Free Audio Books

Additional Comments:

Just found this new website called www.BooksShouldBeFree.com that has lots of free audio books that you can download to a computer, MP3, ipod and some others.  Most of the books look older, a lot of classics.  But, hey, they are still free.

I believe a few months back someone on this board was saying that most audible books are too expensive if you read a lot of books.  I agree.  I love to listen to books, but the cost would be prohibitive for me considering the amount of books I read.  Especially if I had to buy them for $30 a book and then pay a fee to belong to the company you buy from.

Think I will read some of these on my computer and use headphones.

Maureen, would you believe I came to this message board tonight to tell you I finally bit the bullet and subscribed to Audible.com. I'm taking advantage of the 3 month trial offer where you can get one book a month for $7.95. My first book is The Help which I'm really enjoying. It turns out I can download it four times and can even burn CDs if I want. Am trying to find out how to share with other people. I downloaded it to my MP3 player. As with anything technical, it took me a while to figure things out (and a call to tech support), but it was worth it. After the three month trial period, I'll probably take the package for two books a month which will be around ten bucks a book.

  • Hi Maggie; that's pretty exciting. I know we were talking about that a while back and you were thinking about it then. Please let us know what you think about it. Right now I have invested so much in my genealogy programs that I can't justify joining Audible Books, but sure wish I could. The Help is one of the books I read on my Kindle, and I liked it pretty well. Let me know what you think about it.........................................maureen1900

They aren't exactly free, but for about $3.50 you can rent video books from any Cracker Barrel.  What you do is go into the gift shop, pick out a book and you pay full price for it. You return it within a week and you get all but $3.50 back.   When going on long road trips, I'll rent one at the local Cracker Barrel,  return it at the Cracker Barrel 6 hours away or whenever I've finished it - and then pick up another one for the rest of the trip, and so on.  Good deal!

  • Yes, my husband and I love to rent the Cracker Barrel books when on a trip. There are not any close to our house, so for home I think I will use this new site I found...........................................maureen1900
  • One more idea - our local library has audio books for free, too
  • I am very interested in all the conversations re audio or e-books but I'm not very knowledgeable about the topic. I'm getting older and some of this technology is passing me by. For example, I don't know what a video book is, or how you read it. Which is better iPod or MP3 player? How do you download to them, does it require a USB port on the computer? (Mine is hard to get to.). Any advice or info is appreciated./MissM
  • Miss M. Audio books and Ebooks are different. Audio books you listen to. They might be tapes, CDs, or files downloaded to some device. Ebooks, you read. They can be downloaded directly to any of the electronic gadgets like Kindle, Nook, I Pad, or even your computer. And you don't need to use an ISB port. I listen to audio books. I download them to my computer and then transfer them to my MP3 player and yes, you need a USB port. I like the MP3 player better than an IPod because it's cheaper and mine uses a AAA battery. With Ipods, you have to charge it. If you are on a long flight, or a long road trip, you may run out of power. I just got back from a 2,000 mile road trip and listened to audio books the whole way./mm
  • Thanks from one MM to another.
  • Well, actually, I don't know about the other e-readers. But you can listen to books on the Kindle e-reader like I have. It is the only e-reader that has the Text to Speech feature, where if you get tired of reading (like me, I have bad eyes), you can just push a button and it will start reading the book to you with a computer voice and automatically turn the pages. Plus I can download audio books from the Audible website just like people do for the MP3s and other devices. Then it reads with the author's voice. That is what I am thinking about doing - just plug my headphones in it so I don't disturb my husband while he is sleeping.....................................................maureen1900
