Topic: AI Theme for this week

Additional Comments:

The theme tonight are the "Songs of Billy Joel".

I don't have a list but some of you didn't like me putting on a list anyway. I thought that the theme was okay. You can think about who might sing what tonight.

I'm thinking off the top of my head--Phillip Phillips for "Piano Man";
Colton for "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" or even 'Piano Man' since he plays the piano;
Heejun-"New York State of Mind" (he sang it in Hollywood);
Hollie-"Honesty"? to name a few.

I'm sure I'm all wrong because I'm thinking fast here. I'm still trying to think who would fit. I'm not sure what for all the girls. Who would do "Uptown Girl"--anyone? There are just so many. If you want to list your picks and who might sing them, go right ahead. Let's speculate!

Oh, BTW, the guest mentor for this week is Huey Lewis.

I too, prefer when they do songs they pick.
I think the show, when they do the picking they are going for audience recognition not the contestant's ability to do or know the person or the song they are doing.
no matter how good you are at singing or how great your voice is you cannot do every song and do a good job.

  • ITA. It always bugs me when they tell the contestants to sing older or younger than they are or even dress a certain way and then when they do, the judges tell them that they are out of their comfort zone and should stick to that. It's very maddening and why a lot of contestants get confused and don't do well. ~ eom. Linda

    Billy Joel?  I Liked  AI best when they didn't do these theme weeks.  I know they want to challenge their versatility, but a singer needs to sing a song they can get into.  SO much has happened since Billy Joel.

    I can't even think of Billy Joel sngs off the top of my head.

    "Don't Go Changing".  That's the one and only song I can think of right now without looking them up.

  • I know what you mean, misspm. That's why I didn't put much on for suggestions either. I couldn't remember some of them. Then AI producers wonder why the ratings are going down. ~ eom. Linda
  • Piano man is the only one for me, LOL

    Rebel is right, these songs are too old for these kids. (except maybe a couple ) they are not going to sing those after AI anyway.

    Though, I still love Piano man, one of my all time favs.

    I will report later on tonights show.

  • Sorry, Bonk. Didn't mean to steal any of your thunder. I look forward to your recap. I just happened to see this and the impulse to let everyone know got the better of me. I did check to see if you had already put something on before posting. I agree with Rebel, too. Like I said, below, it just bugs me when they sing old songs (although I like hearing them) but then the judges jump on their case for picking a song too old for them. The show has been putting a lot of current songs on within the last few weeks so why not have a theme that matches? They have used several Idol winners songs lately--Kelly, Carrie, Jordin, David Cook, etc. Why not have a past Idol winners theme? Even include the runners-up who have sold albums. ~ eom. Linda
  • No problem, Linda. I did not know,. Looks like Diddy was the mentor (shawn combs) well Deandre did not even know who Christie Brinkly was, LOL~~Bon
  • I guess Huey was just a rumor. I even posted that later in the day just in case. I did hear after I posted that it could be Diddy, but even that wasn't definite, LOL! It just shows that things can still change. It was hard to hear but DeAndre did say he knew who Christie Brinkley was. ~ eom. Linda

    Why Billy Joel songs? I wish they would stop with the themes. These are 'old' songs for these aspiring singers and it seems a waste of their talent to force them to sing a certain style of someone else.
    I guess after watching the Whitney/Stevie Wonder night, I really started thinking about this. I hope it ends up being better then what I have pictured in my mind.

  • I couldn't agree more. Why make them sing things not in their genre? Each star has their own thing and that is what they do. I don't think it's fair to anyone. Especially the younger ones that haven't a clue who Billy Joel is nor do they care. I am not caring much about him either.~~Sandy
  • What I don't like is when they do the old songs and then the judges tell the kids that the song they picked is too old for them. Well, yeah! Especially, since it seems they are starting to get the permission of more current songs to sing. ~ eom. Linda
