Anyone shopping at Penney's since they did away with coupons and sales? This every day low pricing they converted to seems to be a huge mistake on their part.
I have been there twice since they changed over and haven't bought a thing. I miss the coupons -- especially the $10 off a $25 purchase. Those were great!
The following is from part of an Associated Press article:
The department store chain's stock plunged nearly 20 percent on Wednesday - the biggest decline in at least four decades, including the 1987 stock market crash. The drop came a day after Penney said it would stop paying dividends and blamed its large first-quarter loss on a poor reception from shoppers for its strategy of getting rid of hundreds of sales each year in favor of offering predictable low prices every day.
The plan, rolled out Feb. 1, aims to stop the cycle of heavy discounting - and discourage customers from waiting for sales to shop. But the reaction by investors and shoppers shows how difficult it will be for Penney to change the mindset of consumers who have been conditioned to expect blockbuster deals from Penney during the economic downturn.

Message: I really don't like the store, regardless of the prices or coupons. Their clothes just don't appeal to me and I particularly don't care for their purses.

Message: It used to be my favorite store but I haven't bought anything in there since the change. I certainly won't go back since those in charge are making quotes like "We've got to wean them off this and educate our consumers." So they're saying because I like coupons, I need an education?? Also, the article I read says "The company is now launching a new ad campaign that compels customers to 'do the math' on its new prices." I have done the math and I got much better prices before the change. I went in there every week for a while after they changed just hoping to find something, but the prices weren't what I wanted to pay. I know I can go somewhere else and get the same item or something similar for less. They claim that everything is 40% off the old regular prices, but that isn't true. There was a comforter set that I loved and was planning to buy. Regular price at that time was $99.99. They were always having it on sale for around $65.00. I walked through there on Wednesday and saw that same comforter at the low, low fair and square price of $100!! Yes, it went up a penny from the old regular price. They've lost my business.

I haven't shopped there since December, but it's just because I haven't been over there. The lack of coupons won't bother me since I usually just pop in and don't have a coupon anyway.

Message: Haven't been there since the change. I thought that it would prove to be successful. I can't stand all the gimmicks other stores use. I have noticed how beautiful and up scale there advertising campaign is.

Actually, I've bought more stuff at JCP since their new pricing plan began than I did before. I like not having to keep up with coupons and sales or wonder if the item I'm interested in today is going to be cheaper a week from now. The prices are reasonable, even ridiculously low on some things. I don't get why people don't like this format. In the end, I don't think you save any more by using coupons and trying to time the sales than you do under the current pricing scheme, plus it's a lot less convenient.
