Topic: Alternatives to Swiffer Wet Jet

Additional Comments:

My Swiffer WetJet is officially dead.   I killed it.    I was going to buy a new one, but wondered if there is anything else out there that's better for hardwood floors.    I never really liked that thing anyway, but used it because I bought it.

I'd like something that does it all.   Vaccuums up the dirt/dust and then turned into a mop!  Does this exist?

I am seriously considering the O Cedar mop featured on the Celebrity Apprentice. Dont laugh! I looked at it at the store and it looked pretty good. Saw a deal where it would have been $8 but I couldnt get it home that day. Waiting for another deal to come around. It retails for $20.

I just looked at a Bissel steam mop/vac today and I think I'm gonna go with that one. I think it goes for around $125.00 at Walmart.

  • It's not a good idea IF you have wood floors. No floor company recommends a steam mop. The steam will eventually seap thru the wood and rot the actual flooring causing it to creak or worse break. If your floor is laminated it will stripped the wax off of it. Consistant use of a steam vac the varnish will come off the floor. Also if you do take the plunge and get a steam mop make sure you use distilled water. Tap will clog the steam vents in time.
  • I hadn't heard that but I mainly use my steam mop on my tile floors. Sheryl
  • I have to agree about the steam. My floors are over 100 years old and beautiful. I won't DARE use steam on them. Nicky

I had in the past just bought the refillable floor wipes, dry and wet for my basic swifter. I had a dirt devil small vacuum that has a canister you shake out. It is light weight so good on hard wood floors.

But in order to save money, bc those refill things can add up, I was looking for an old fashioned dust mop. They are hard to find! We had them growing up! I did find at Target and I think around 20.00 a dust mop/cleaning mop for hardwood or laminate floors.

Instead of being round the fuzzy mop part that collects the dust bunnies etc, is long. When done dusting, you shake it out. Then easily you flip it over and the other side is for mopping! I get a product you spray on the floor that is for hardwood or Laminate floors. The whole mop thing, can be take off the handle and washed in washer. Let it air dry.

So that is what I am using now.

  • I have been searching everywhere for one of those dust mops. We had one growing up as well. Thanks for the Target tip. I did find one online at Fuller Brush. I was shocked they are still around. That is most likely where my mom bought the one we had......Jana
  • Jana, they are hard to find! The one I have is O Cedar dual-action Flip mop. www.ocedar.com

How dead is it? Silly question I know, but if it isn't producing steam, here is something you can try. Mine went out a few months ago as well and before spending $80 on a new one, I did some troubleshooting research. It is now working as well as it ever did. First, turn it over and you will see a small hole where the steam comes out. Take a toothpick or small wire and run it up that hole. Then fill the tank with vinegar, pure vinegar, not diluted, turn it on and run it through the entire cycle, pumping as you go. If it does nothing it is probably dead. If it is just slow, once it runs through one cycle, do it again. If you can, do it outside as the vinegar gets very strong.

Also, always empty the tank once you are finished using it.

  • Oops, sorry! I had my cleaners mixed up. The solution I gave was for the Shark Steamer.......Jana

My last swiffer wet jet died, and I replaced it with the Rubber Maid Reveal mop.  I like it better than the swiffer because you can use your own cleaning solution and the pads are washable.  Much cheaper in the long run!  I also think it does a better job on my hardwood floors.  It doesn't sweep though, sorry!
