Topic: Why was Connie created?

Additional Comments: I don't know much of Kate's backstory because I hadn't watched in many years, but why does Connie exist?  With Victoria Lord and Jessica Buchanan, it was because they were sexually abused as children.  Do you think this is the reason for Connie?  Or does it have to do with re-imagining herself from the wild child she was in her youth as Connie to the sedate and sophisticated Kate?  Something wouldn't let go of who she originally was?  I don't know if I have ever heard of that as a reason for DID, but I suppose it is a possibility.  Anyway, for those who know Kate, any ideas?

I'm not sure this condition even exists the way it is portrayed here.  Everything I have read about it leads me to believe that something happens to a person in early childhood that the child's mind can't deal with, and shrinks away from it, making room for another side (or personality) to appear.  The part about the blackouts is consistent with the resources I've read, where one personality has no idea what's going on with the other.  For Kate/Connie to both know what the other is doing before integration seems a little farfetched to me.  OMG!  What am I saying?  Farfetched?  On a soap?

I think the writers are treating the "blackouts" like the ones people have when they drink too much.  From what I've read, DID blackouts are for sometimes extended periods of time with the alter going about life with minimal notice by others.  One case study I read was about a young girl who suddenly "came to" in the middle of a 7th grade class with no knowledge of anything happening for months.

This could easily trace back to Deke or one of Frank Smith's men.  When Connie & Sonny were growing up the Frank Smith mob was very powerful in their neighborhood.  Lots of the kids who were aimless & restless fell in w/them.

Deke used his position as a police officer to groom parents & kids, so he too could have easily been even sleazier than previously depicted.  He became involved w/Sonny's mother & said that he was trying to keep Sonny from going to the mob side of life, to explain away his abuse of Sonny.  Why not also have done the same w/Connie, one of Sonny's friends/girlfriend?

MPD/DID (multiple personality disorder or disociative identity disorder) usually has its roots further back, in earlier childhood than the teen yrs & involves horrible abuses.  It doesn't happen because someone was made fun of growing up or because they had a bad experience in their teens.

  • PS: Connie was created as part of Sonny's past. She had re-invented herself as Kate & wanted to spend part of her time away from NYC, so she bought (& renovated) the estate next to Sonny's. eom

I just had a great idea! How about if Jessica Buchanan came to the show. Then she could do scenes with Connie/Kate. Then they can bring in Vikki and she can become Nikki. Of course with Jess and Vikki in the show Natalie will have to join and maybe Roxie will follow. Of course you can't have Natalie and Roxie without Rex, Gigi, and Shane. If Vikki is going to be there Victor Jr. has to be there.

  • The part would have to be recast since Bree Williamson is to Star in Syfy's HAVEN. eom/K
  • I wouldn't like it at all. Helena
  • I was a fan of OLTL but I wouldn't want all of the actors to invade GH. Luna
  • I want General Life to Live. That would be cool.-Miss.B
  • LOL, MB. I'd like to win the lottery, too. Most of the OLTL actors don't meet the standards as of most of the GH cast which is well known to be the best in daytime even when OLTL was on. I know this will piss some people off but it is not just my opinion. I've been reading for years ''what a shame GH has such poor writing when they have the best cast''. Like Starr, a lot of OLTL characters won't fit onto the canvas. We don't even know if Todd will be a success yet. So far the only real successful implant is McBain, according the posts. I hope Todd will be liked but you never know. This is GH and will never be OLTL and if it becomes so I for one will stop watching. I don't think the goal of the suits is to lose GH viewers just to please the defunct OLTL viewers. OLTL and GH have very styles. Helena
  • Insert ''different'' between ''very'' and ''styles''. Helena
  • OLTL ended with better ratings than GH. OLTL was about stories, and characters while GH was about mob wars. OLTL had the best ratings of all the abc soaps. They cancelled the wrong soap. GH has improved because they now have the OLTL writters. It's like the reincarnation of OLTL in a way.-Miss.B
  • Yes, due to the writers, not OLTL characters, which will not improve GH ratings. It's all about the writing and with the best cast in daytime it's a winning combination. Helena
  • If it was about the best in daytime OLTL would still be on. Obviously it didn't matter that OLTL had the best ratings. -Miss.B
  • Also, I have to say you missed a pretty good soap. OLTL had a good variety of characters and storylines. It was all about families and character. The writters couldn't have done it without the great cast of OLTL.
  • I used to watch it when I was a teen and in fact it was my first soap but I just grew weary of it and moved onto GH when Gloria Monty took over and although over the years I've taken long hiatuses from all soaps, GH is the only one that could draw me back. I've had plenty of opportunities to start watching OLTL again but one soap is enough nonsense for me, LOL, and I just prefer GH and the GH cast. I never grew fond enough of the Llanview folks as I did Luke and Laura, Robert Scorpio, Alexis and the Quartermaines, for example. Helena

She hasn't been fully evaluated yet and I predict some hypnotism and regression will be required to get to the bottom of Connie and just when she first appeared as an alter.

If I were to guess, I'd say Connie was always there since she decided to become Kate but lay dormant and didn't rear her head until post trauma i.e., getting shot at during her own wedding. In fact Connie is most likely the result of post traumatic stress syndrome.

  • I wondered if something happened to her in college while she was trying to become Kate--maybe something that made her determine to change her name and her entire background. Something really terrible--maybe something she witnessed or experienced...? GHFan
  • Interesting, GHFan. I thought it was Sonny who made her want to change. Didn't she leave him waiting at the curb when she ditched her old persona? I always wondered if she also got pregnant and perhaps had to get an abortion of give up her child. Helena
  • Wasn't it Anthony who shot Kate at the wedding? And yet Connie hates Sonny, which works for me anyway. I think that is what the writers have in mind though. Connie emerged to prevent Kate from putting herself back in the line of fire b/c Kate just can't resist those dimples. Maddie
  • Yes, it was Anthony who shot her but she knows it was because of Sonny and to hurt Sonny. She should also be remembering Michael getting shot, while standing right next to him, from a bullet intended for Sonny. Connie gets that Sonny's woes are Sonny's fault every time and those around him are usually the victims, not him. I still think Connie came forth after the bloody wedding. The trauma induced it. Jessica was sexually abused? By who?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Some guy at a bar . . .Niki took Jess with her when she was barhopping and left the child with him while she went off to have fun with her latest man. /SheilaT
  • Wasn't there also a video tape that Jessie later watched? Maddie
  • Yes, the taped was titled Tess and it showed everything the guy in the bar did to her . . .
