Do you de-string your celery before eating it?    I keep celery sticks in the fridge, but I always take a knife and get rid of the outer stringy part.    I love celery, but when I try to eat it at a salad bar or somewhere they don't remove those, I have to just pull them off and lay them on my plate.

If you don't, HOW do you chew that stuff?   And why?    lol

Also, are you a celery eater?    I have a theory that some people wouldn't even LIKE it if the only way they had been served it was with all those strings on it!

Yes, I use celery mostly in salads, soups, stews.  Also use it with corned beef and pot roast with the other veggies.  I take off the loose strings, but don't worry too much about it.

I wrap it in foil too, and it lasts well over a month!  I read about that tip years ago and it really works.

  • Yep, I read about the alum. foil online too. Maybe we learned it here. It sure does work well. I recently heard we should wrap our cheese in it too. I haven't tried that yet. I LOVE those new pkgs. of swiss that you can just peel back to open and then close them. Easy peasy! Gail

Like you, I cannot eat celery strings. I pull them off before I eat sticks of celery, plain or with peanut butter or cream cheese. I put celery in my tuna salad, tossed salad, potato salad, macaroni salad and pasta salad. Celery is probably mostly water, but I like the crunchiness.

  • I like the crunchy factor and the taste too. Glad to see you use it in all of your salads too. I was wondering if I was the only one. Well, not the ONLY one, but in the minority. Gail

I like celery, but I use most of it in cooking.  If eaten raw I don't bother to de-string it unless as I'm cutting it the strings won't cut.  Those get pulled off.  I only eat it raw in a tuna/apple salad I make or with hummus or peanut butter.

  • Like I said below, the ONLY salad I make that doesn't have celery is egg salad. It is a total fav of mine. I am going to look online now at allrecipes.com and see if lots of people don't use it in their potato salad, etc. Curious to see if it isn't as popular with folks as it is with me. Gail
  • My potato salad consists of 5 ingredients: potatoes, eggs, pickles, mayo and mustard (lots of it). And, of course, salt and pepper. The pickles give it the needed crunch. Wanda
  • I googled tater salad and most people do put celery. :-P About the only other diff. in yours and mine is I put a little bit of sugar and vinegar in mine too. I expect there are as many ''recipes'' for potato salad as there are people. I never used to put sweet pickles because I liked it better without them, but Terry liked them and I slowly started liking it that way. Gail
  • OH! And onion. You left out the onion. I put onion in every salad I made except egg too. We're onion lovers here. Gail

Yes, I like celery. I buy celery hearts. I snack on it and pull the string off while I eat it. Celery is the only food that you lose calories while eating it.

    Celery stewed is easily chewed,

Celery raw is good for the jaw.

  • That's the way I have to do it if I'm having it somewhere they haven't removed the strings. Those things just aren't good imo. The ONLY time I will leave them on is if I'm making a hearty soup in the winter. The roughage is probably good for ya. Love your jingle! So true! Gail

I can take 'em or leave 'em. Mostly leave 'em. They are hard to digest. :(

  • I can imagine the STRINGS would be hard to digest, but just the celery is too? Gail

I'm neutral. I buy it because I think I should have it on hand. I wouldn't really grab it for a snack though. I HATE the strings but hubby doesn't mind them.

  • I wouldn't grab celery out of the fridge for a snack either. Although it's good stuffed with pimento cheese or peanut butter, but I haven't done either in years. But I love it with other things as a way to get in a veggie. Gail

I buy it, but I'm lazy and buy the hearts and just eat 'em like that.  Like U, I never considered it a problem unless it threaded thru my teeth and then I just pull it out!

Celery is best with pimento cheese spread, peanut butter or cream cheese smeared in it.  It does lend a delightful crunchiness to salads.

  • I even de-string the hearts. I agree with you about it in salads. But I love it in soups and just plain too. Gail

I leave the string on--never had a problem eating it, although I find celery itself fairly useless unless it is in beef stew or tuna salad.

  • You must have much stronger teeth than I do. That isn't hard to do btw. I love celery as a side w/ my lunch (with a few carrot sticks too.) I love it in ANY salad (pasta, tater, lettuce, chicken, tuna, etc.) Everything but egg. Never put it in egg salad. I put it in every soup I make except chili too. Love the crunch factor I guess. Gail
  • My celery usually wilts before I finish using it--not that big of a fan./U
  • U, if you ever WANTED it to last, I learned a trick that'll keep it fresh for many more days. Wrap it in alum. foil. It works. I rarely have mine last that long, but have occasionally needed it to stay fresh longer. Gail

Yes, I get rid of that stringy stuff on the celery. I use a vegetable peeler to scrap the celery "clean". Biting into a peice of celery that strings is just gross.

Lately, I have been eating a lot of celery. It's like I can't get enough of it. Last week I made my favorite celery salad...so simple...celery, black olives, olive oil, and S&P to taste. I ate it for lunch everyday and we had it at dinner one night.

  • We could probably live together IF you didn't keep your house freezing cold in the winter and not turn on the AC in the summer. That wouldn't work for temperature wussy me. I'd love that salad, but Terry would just think it was so-so because of the ripe olives and lack of MEAT. Gail
