Topic: A Gifted Man star says he 'couldn't be happier' that the show is over

Additional Comments: I think this is kind of interesting, and I don't think the actor is being sarcastic about it. Patrick Wilson has said a few things about the show's cancellation on Twitter. First, he knew the writing was on the wall for quite a while due to the low 18-49 ratings, since he says the cancellation was "shocking to no one."

It seems that he was not very happy with working on A Gifted Man, writing, "As good as it was (sometimes) it was not what I signed on for." It's probably not the smartest thing to publicly criticize the show, but hey, it's honest. So then there's the question of what exactly he thought he was signing on for. Speculation here.

Wilson "couldn't be happier" that the show is over, so I expect he'll be doing more Broadway, movie, or short-term TV roles for at least a while instead of looking for another series lead. If A Gifted Man had been renewed, it would have been with a not-thrilled lead actor.

A contrast to this is Kathy Bates, who has expressed disappointment over the cancellation of Harry's Law. She would have been happy to do another season but won't get that chance. I'm sure she too will soon be appearing elsewhere, though.

I appreciated the fact that 'A Gifted Man' was technically accurate, more than not.  It didn't talk down to the audience either.  All too often, especially when a main character is supposed to be smart & have a demanding career, things get dumbed down to a point of being ridiculous.  I loved the fact that, medically, 'A Gifted Man' was accurate, without talking down to the viewer.

If the actor didn't want to be doing a weekly series, then he shouldn't have signed on to do this.  There are lots of better actors out there who would have been far more appreciative of the opportunity than he apparently was.  I guess I wasn't wrong in picking up on a distance in PW's 'performance'.

Oh no!  Harry's Law is ending?  Dang, my son loves that show.  He will be disappointed. Me too.  What lawyer show will we watch together next year?

  • I'd recommend renting or buying past seasons of *Boston Legal* (if you didn't watch it before); I found H.L. to be pretty much identical to that, and they're both written by David E. Kelley. -Spell
  • Thanks, we have seen Boston Legal. We used to watch that before it ended. Denny Crane! Fantastic.
  • Love everything David E Kelley and I'm really bummed about their cancelling Harry. Maddie McD

Very interesting; thanks for sharing this.  Well that's one reason not to be so sad about "A Gifted Man's" cancellation!

Sorry for Kathy Bates.  From what I hear those weekly TV show paychecks are AWESOME, compared to the once-in-a-while, undependable movie offers.  Good way to get rich, if you're smart with your money.
