Topic: Do most of you guys DVR your programs?

Additional Comments: One of the board's wags posted a funny reply to Cordero's most recent topic. The topic was in regards to primetime programming content. Said wag pointed out that, CBS would not find the opinions of male viewers relevant. Even more so, if you are a Canadian male viewer. It was said in jest.

But I am wondering if the networks focus on target audiences may end up all for naught as it seems viewing behavior is changing. The DVR allows viewers to experience programs as programs, rather then advertising vehicles, making television advertising less relevant. Just mulling things over.

I record a lot of things because I have a very flexible schedule & I like to watch programs on my schedule, as opposed to being dictated to by folks like Moonface.

I don't watch on a mobile device, only because I don't have one--yet.  When I do I probably would, when my schedule permits.  I like watching at various times, while I'm working, as well as during my leisure time.  What is rarely acknowledged by the Suits is that viewers aren't all on that 9-5 work-a-day schedule, M-F.  I regularly work weekends & late evenings, getting home after midnight.  I can also be away from a tv for weeks at a time, so I catch up when I get home.  I like relaxing after work by watching soaps, but then I also like watching in 'real time' too.

It is unfortunate that TPTB (Corp) refuse to acknowledge how viewing has changed.  I've said many times that technology should be soaps' friend, not the enemy.  Lots of people do shift work, so that 9-5 model doesn't 'fit' for them.

The same w/the old theories of the demographics.  Assuming that those over 26 have their buying habits & brand loyalties fixed isn't totally accurate.  It certainly isn't when it comes to the 50+ crowd, which IS the growing market, w/Boomers in that 50+ bracket, or close to it. Many of those 50+ are starting new careers, going back to school, starting new families, raising grandchildren, etc.  It has been proven time & again that the 50+ demo is much less brand loyal & more willing to try new products, rather than the outdated belief that many Suits are wedded to--unfortunately.

I, personally, find it insulting that so many Suits base their business decisions on the idea that daytime viewers are uneducated, of limited means & insultingly stupid.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  But that reality doesn't play into their pre-conceived, narrow minded assumptions about us.  Yet, that same group of viewers is seen as intelligent, educated & worthy of their time if they are watching after 5pm!

I DVR everything, I don't even know when most the shows I like come on, I just set them to record and watch them whenever, sometimes a week later. I do FF all commercials, so I wonder too how the sponsors really get any feedback from their ads.

Actually, the topic was about CBS Daytime programming content, not primetime.

And like it or not, the reality is that ABC, NBC, and CBS still program to 18-49 WOMEN during the daytime.  Case in point:  just last year, it was reported that OLTL executive producer, Frank Valentini, gleefully beamed that his soap had finally managed to tie or beat Y&R in the ratings (for a single episode).  But skeptics asked, WTF?  Is he crazy?  See what matters most to the nets is the key demo, and what Valentini said was true within this reality.

  • P.S. The science of Nielsen ratings monitors and reports DVR views just like they track LIVE views, so both the advertisers and networks are well aware of the percentage of total viewers who are DVRing a program, so it's not as if ...

I DVR everything I watch and of course I FF thru all the commercials. I've always wondered how that affected advertising and wherever they do the Neilson ratings to see what people are watching... are the people in those programs allowed to use recording devices? It's got to have an affect on advertising. I wonder how they deal with that?
