And I love Paul (well, especially Doug Davidson).
Paul was a wild teen, playing sex games with Nikki. He was really not a role model for Patty. Yes, he was a brother and I am sure he cared abt his sister but the way Patty was talking Paul walked on water and at that time I don't even think Patty thought he walked on water. (Wait, she was talking about when he was 14, well, maybe, then but certainly not when he was 18 or 19).

Well, Patty & Paul were the closest of the two siblings, however. That was pretty clear even in the 80s. Back then, Patty's YOUNGER brother, Todd, was sent off to one of those Catholic Seminary High Schools for 14-year old boys who wanted to become priests (e.g. St. Lawrence in Mount Calvary, Wisconsin), so he wasn't even around. And Patty's OLDEST brother, Steve, was very career-driven. Within The Williams family Steve's main role seemed to be to show how different he and Paul were. Steve would point out how Paul had no drive or ambition to make anything of his life, believing Paul had some kind of inferiority complex, because he was the SECOND SON who didn't even want to try to match the FIRST SON'S accomplishments for fear of failure. As I recall, Steve was pretty much gone (off to Washington, DC) by the time Lilibet Stern took over the role of Patty in 1981. So, the majority of sibling scenes we got were between the two middle-children, Paul & Patty, and their tighter-knit relationship is believable based on this history. - jmho
Even when Paul was 18 and 19 and sowing his wild oats he was probably a loving brother to little sister Patty.
He more than likely didn't tell his younger sister about his sexcapades at the time and she only knew him as her savior and protector.
I like Doug Davidson as well and "Paul" is endearing, regardless of his Inspector Clouseau profession.
