Topic: Y&R: 100,000 less viewers than last week & 300,000 less viewers than last year

Additional Comments: Those numbers are *almost* 100,000 and 300,000.

The Young and the Restless has less women 18-49 viewers, and less men viewers (both last week and last year).

I really believe that Y&R have more Women over 50 watching than any other age group they choose to target. I have no idea why they ignore their long term and largest fan base.

  • Yes. Y&R's ''median viewer age'' is over 57 now, so that means at least half the show's viewers are over that age, and the majority of those are women. But concentrating on those viewers would only hasten the show's demise. Y&R needs to attract viewers in the key demo that daytime advertisters care about: 18-49 female viewers. If they don't make an effort to attract and retain younger viewers, then the show's median viewer age will just continue to go up and up and up as viewers age each year. That's basically what killed Guiding Light. It was reported that the show couldn't even meet the much less demanding goal that older-skewing CBS had set for it in 25-54W demo. And for the record, I don't agree with this mentality, but that's just the reality of advertiser-supported television. It's the same way in primetime. When it comes to ad-rates, in some cases, an 18-34-year old viewer can be worth twice as much as a viewer over the age of 50.

    So the hell what!!

Im just very appreciative that TPTB at least care enough about their shows and loyal soap opera viewers like me to keep them in production.

    Unlike others.

I hope Y&R stays on television for another 40 years.

I don't know if those numbers are actually correct. Not that you don't have the information but so many of us tape the show--either Tivo or DVR and on top of that many watch on Soapnet and I'm not sure if the statistics they have that you mention are actually accurate. I don't know if taped or Soapnet times are actually included in those figures.

  • Nielsen Household Viewers who watch by VCR and DVR are accounted for in the ratings. (All VCR counts and a DVR must be watched within 24 hours to count.) But the numbers Annie is quoting from are only for the CBS broadcast of Y&R. The numbers for SOAPnet are calculated separately and are not included here. These numbers also do not reflect the hundreds of thousands of viewers who have now started watching Y&R online at cbs.com. These have increased year-over-year for the last three years.

The good news is that the cumulative (-100,000) loss was with male viewers, which daytime advertisers don't really care that much about anyway.  And both the 18-49W and 18-34W HouseHold numbers and corresponding audience Share points remained the same, signaling that the recent growth in these key demos shows stability.
