I want to try to color my own hair.  I call my hair light brown.  The reviews I have been reading say that it comes out darker than the box.  The color on the Lt. Brown box looks darker than mine to begin with.  I just want my natural color, not darker, not blond.  Any suggestions?

In my experience, it always comes out darker than the box.  I have what I consider "medium brown" hair, and I use a dark blonde shade to get the color I want.  I use Clairol "Perfect 10" because you only have to leave it in 10 minutes as opposed to 25 or so.

One time I decided to go a little darker and actually used a "medium brown" shade.  It turned out black!  I had to go back and buy a kit to strip all the color out and then re-dye it.  It took pretty much all day and was probably pretty damaging to my hair too.

Wow, those colors are very dark. Especilly the light blonde! That's not blonde. Go with lighter like everyone else is saying. Good luck. pj

I agree with one of the other posters - go to Sally Beauty Supply if you have one.  They only sell high quality salon hair color.  If you want to completely color your hair, most hair color requires you mix it 50% color and 50% developer (20% volume).  It is cheaper to buy there and you get a better product.  I have shoulder length hair and I only have to use half a bottle of color to do my hair, so I get two applications out of it.

LOL - seems others here give much better advise than I ever would. I'm lazy:

I pick a color, dump it on my hair before my shower, leave it in for 45 mins (I like to go dark these days) rinse it out and condition. Voila - done!

I forget what I use, but I THINK it's L'Oreal. Can't remember. I have never had problems. Beats paying $70 +, plus tip at the salon.

You could always buy a lighter and darker shade and mix half and half in a different container. That's what I would do. I colour my roots every 4 weeks or so, and do my whole head once every 6 months (approx). My hair is so long now and I have so much of it (not to mention so much gray!) that I use a whole box for root touchups and two boxes for the whole head.

I have been doing my own hair color for about 17 years. I started doing it myself because the salon was way too expensive & it faded just as fast. I find that it's best to go a shade lighter because the color is always darker than you expect. It does fade quite a bit after a few shampoos though. My hair used to be quite dark & I am VERY gray so I have to color my hair every 3 weeks. I like L'Oreal Preference the best & it's about $8 a box.

  • It seems to be the rule that hair always turns out darker. Why don't they change the pictures on the boxes to something more truthful? / Sapphire

I am a hair stylist. I color hair. When in doubt, go lighter, it is easier to make it a bit darker later, then dry to make too dark color light again.

My advice, test strand, test strand, test stand. you should also test mix color in the inside of your elbow for allergies. Follow direction. Do not get Lady Clariol, it is stronger and not so good for hair. Lorel is better. Better yet go to a salon and talk to some one there.

The back of your head, by your neck is your true color. The color on top of your head, has been exposed to the sun, what your water is, environmental stuff. That part of your hair will take different. Are you coloring grey? or Blending it. Why are you coloring your hair?. Do you want streaks, highlights or all one color?

If you have hard water, it will affect your color. You need to use a good like Redken, color care and shampoo. A day or two before you color your hair, use a good cleansing shampoo on the hair, wash 2 times. Then put a good deep conditioner protein treatment on the hair shaft. Leave on 5 to 15 min. Rinse. (go to local Beauty supply places and ask the people there)

when you are ready to color, separate the hair in 4 sections. Make a part from front of head to neck, then ear to ear. Protect the counter, but a old shirt on. Wear GLOVES! Color roots only first of each section, lift up hair, do that hair and do next area, then to next section. If color says leave on 30 min. and the this is first time color, then run the color on ends last 15 min. No more might be too dark. you might need 2 boxes if hair is long.

Once timing is done, rinse out carefully and condition the hair, very important!

There is a lot do to when coloring hair, that is why we are professionals and charge good $$ for it. That is not saying you can't do your own, many do. But just take your time and be careful. If your hair is damaged or not healthy the color will grab on those areas and go to dark. Again best to go lighter at first, until you know what you are doing. "

    Good luck!

  • I just read those boxes, if is permanent color, means you mix two things together. Your hair grows out half an inch a month. So in a month of so, you will see the outgrowth. They can not say it last 8 weeks. Because color fades and it depends on how you take care of it. ~~Bon
  • What do you think of powdered henna?
  • Thanks, Bonk. The products I'm looking at are the new foam stuff. I can't handle anything complicated, messy. / Sapphire

Here is a site with lots of important info.

The base color is one important factor.  I would go to Sally Beauty Supply.  Lots of the sales people are hairdressers (or have been)

I've been coloring my hair myself for many years.  I understand your dilema.  I usually use Nice-and-Easy.  I consider my natural hair color to be light brown.  If I use light brown color it comes out too dark, at first.  If I use dark blonde, it looks good the first couple of weeks, but seems to fade and look washed out.  I wish Clairol had a color "in between" light brown and dark blonde.  Lately I've been alternating the two colors every 6 - 8 weeks.  I've tried the 'lightest golden brown' color, it looks good at first, but then turns kind of brassy looking.  Tried 'light ash brown' and it seems kind of dull.  So I've been of no help to you, ha! I'd recommend you use light brown to start with.

  • Thanks, Flash! That's close to what I'm thinking. I think an 'ash' color would end up looking gray. Golden would be too yellow for my coloring. I'm also looking at L'Oreal Mousse, there was a consumer video with a woman who had used their light brown and it looked close to mine. / Sapphire

In my limited experience coloring my hair, it seemed like a slightly lighter color than I actually thought my hair was turned out the best - if that makes any sense.  I thought of my hair was medium brown, but I found that using a dark blonde matched mine own hair color the best.  Good luck.

  • Thanks. I did want to avoid colors with ash or golden tones; I don't think they would look good on me. / Sapphire

This may turn out to be great, but honestly, it may turn out to cost mega bucks to fix it like you want it to be. I'd go to the Beauty Salon......just my opinion.

  • Can't afford regular trips to a salon. I did it once before in '97- different brand that isn't made anymore - and I did okay. Too dark, but it fade out. / Sapphire
  • They will all fade out after a while...how about going to a Beauty School where people training would be coloring your hair...they are cheaper than a Salon.
