When we got our little black kitten 16 yrs ago, we couldn't decide on a name. After about 2 weeks the song ''Black Betty'' came on the radio and we decided on that. Of course she is known as ''Betts'', ''Betsy'', ''Betty Lou'', ''Bitchcat'', ''Hellcat'', etc. She's still a fiesty cat with an attitude at 16.
When we adopted our shelter dog, the shelter had him named Taco, which I didn't like at all. But he seemed to know that name so I just changed it a little to Paco.
Love the post.
I have 3 cats now...
1. Jack and his sister Ashley...named after Y&R brother and sister characters. We lost poor Ashley a few years ago. Still have 'smooth' Jack.
2. Uno..started out as Chloe, another Y&R character but it didn't seem to fit so she became Uno or one, being the first of 2 kittens adopted by us.
3. Rebecca...don't know if she's from the same litter as Uno. The farm where we got them was just loaded with cats..very sad situation, don't like to think of it. We called poor Rebecca 'farm girl' when she first came. A friend of ours was raised on a farm so we were afraid she'd be insulted by the name. So, Farm Girl became Rebecca..you know, of Sunnybrook Farm. LOL
Our cat, Wendell, was adopted from a shelter. His name at the shelter was ''Wonder'' because he was left outside the shelter door in a box with a note that read ''He wondered into our yard and we can't keep him.'' When Mr. Ingy and I adopted him, we narrowed our list of names down to two but couldn't decide between them. So I googled the meaning of both names. When I learned that ''Wendell'' means ''wanderer'', the decision was made for us. Here's Wendell this past Christmas Day:

Lowell got his name because Mr. Ingy didn't like my first choice, ''Neville''. This is Lowell (notice how much he's grown!):

And here are the boys together:

Petey is named after hottie actor, Peter Krause. His nickname is Petey-Bear because the girl who found him (and later advertised him on Craigslist) thought Bear would be a good name for him. But i had already decided on Petey. So now I call him, "Petey-Bear." he answers to it too :-).
Bella is just a name I liked that I decided on w/ one day. I originally was going to name her Luna, as I loved a moon theme. I was also thinking of going w/ the PK theme like w/ Petey, but decided it didn't work for her (was considering "Casey," his character on Sports Night, but it just didn't work). So went w/ Bella, but wanted a cute nickname for her like I have w/ Petey. So my friend suggested "Bella-Button." So now I call her that :-).
So I have Petey-Bear and Bella-Button ;-)
We had a cat once a long time ago when I lived w/ my mother named. "Woody." I knew a lot of dirty-minded boys back then so you can imagine the jokes I got when I told them my cat's name. Anyway, my mother came up w/ the name because when we first got him, we couldn't think of one. My mother found that she was always calling him, "Woody," so she went w/ that. We had him for 14 years.
When our persian cat had kittens, we had intentions of selling all of them .. so we gave them ''temporary'' names. One of the little boys was quite a bit smaller from head to toe than the rest of the litter, so we started calling him Shorty. We figured eventually he'd be living someplace else with a grand name worthy of his cuteness.
But of course we all ended up wanting to keep him (egads!) .. and never changed his name. So he is, and always will be ... Shorty. (Btw, his meow sounds like an infant mewling.. and his mama, who is about half his size, tends to still clean his face .. so he enjoys answering to his nickname ''Baby'').

Our dear, departed Mr. Tuff started out as Tough Guy, which quickly became shortened to Tuffy. Like the pets of other board folks here he had a zillion nicknames--Mr. Fuzzer, the Tuffinator, Ruff Tuff Tuffer, Kibble Breath, Mr. Wooly Bear, Fluff Boy, Fur Mutt, etc.
Years ago we had a tabby named Mouse. As a baby, before her markings became distinct, she looked just like a little brown mouse and always had a shy personality. Mousie was a sweetheart.

Right before my husband and I went to Las Vegas to get re-married, our Akita died and our other dog was so depressed and lonely. So, the day we got back from Las Vegas, we went to the pound 'just to look' (ha-ha) and I found a beautiful white chow/lab mix named Tonka. He was only four months old, so we took him home and re-named him, to what? VEGAS! He is the best dog ever!
