Topic: Do you or someone you know suffer from Techitis?

Additional Comments: Techitis is a word I made up to describe what someone has if they can’t go more than an hour without using some kind of technology device. I swear it has become an epidemic, especially with teens and young adults. I realized how bad it really was over the holidays being around a bunch of them. Between our kids, ages 15, 19 and 23, two student guests, ages 20 and 26 and our friend’s three kids ages 15, 20 and 22, it was a tech fest. I did notice that it wasn’t as bad with the 15 year olds and the ones 22 and over as it was with the 19 and 20 year olds. If these kids were not eating or sleeping they were using either a laptop, cell phone, or some kind of pod, pad or tablet.

We went out to dinner with our friends. At one point we the adults were just sitting there watching as all 6 of our kids gave their thumbs a workout on their phones. One evening I looked down over the family room to see 3 on the sofa and two on the love seat, all using their laptops.

It is mind boggling how the way people entertain themselves has changed since I was a kid. I think it all started with Atari. It is unbelievable how much time people spend these days looking at some type of screen. There was even a cartoon in the newspaper over weekend about it. The scene was a party and each guest was holding some kind of device. The host tells a guest entering that it is a B.Y.O.D. party, meaning Bring Your Own Devices.

If you can get brain cancer from using a cell phone, I don’t know think we have to worry about our kids getting it, since all they seem to do is text instead of dialing.

I do appreciate the knowledge my kids have though when I have issues with my computer or phone. They have saved me a lot of time, money and aggravation.

That's so annoying. I don't mind if they're in a boring meeting (heck, I do it then), or even walking down the street. But what baffles me is when I am with someone and they are texting or their phone rings and they pick up and start talkign to the person. I have a friend who does that on occasion - she hasn't done it in awhile, thankfully - but it is the ultimate in rudeness to do it when you are supposed to be spending face time w/ others.

When I am with someone or some people and my phone rings, I let it go to vm. When I get a text, unless it's a short one to reply to - I tell them I'll text back later. Very simple.

I am shocked and amazed by the number of people on the phone and texting while driving, even though it is illegal in this state, maybe all states I don't know.  What really frustrates me is that someone people justify driving and texting because they are alert and careful - it doesn't matter how careful you are it takes your eyes off the road, even a second or two is enough for a child, other car to be in front of you.  Everytime I heard of a fatality as the result of texting, it just makes me sick, total unneccesary. I hope people who text & drive resulting in an accident are punished to the full extent of the law, just as if they were DWI, it is just a irresponsible.

Last week I got up and walked out of dinner with a friend.  She continued to text as we ordered and received our salads.  I asked the server for my entree to go when she brought my salad.  When my to-go order came, I plunked down enough money on the table to cover my part of the meal and told my friend goodbye.  She had not even noticed that I asked for my meal to go.  She was busy texting with her nieces.  I have since received several apologies from her, but I am not interested in dining with someone who is that rude to the person right in front of them.  I know this is her first experience with being able to text and I think she needs a lesson or two in what is acceptable behavior.

Just today a young mother, 26 was walking and  killed by a car four days before Christmas, leaving a 6 yr old daughter. Her last conversation was on her cel phone.

I used to have good conversations with someone who now keeps head down looking at some phone thing.

I see kids riding bikes and one or both are ''engaged''

Aso saw 2 young women riding horses and one was connected.

Somewhere or other, I read that people were talking during a funeral viewing. Childbirth too.  Disgusting!

I swear it's the end of humanity when people don't acknowledge other human beings face to face.  It reminds me of a scene in the 1960 movie ''The Time Machine'' when the Eloi just sit there emotionless when someone is in trouble.

George explores, and spots young adults by a river. A woman is drowning, but the others are indifferent. George rescues her, but is surprised by her lack of gratitude or other emotion. She calls herself Weena (Yvette Mimieux) and her people the Eloi.

George is surprised to find out that the Eloi have no government, no laws, and no civilization to speak of. They live a mundane, uninteresting existence and appear to be devoid of any human emotion. He asks to see their books, but when he finds the books all covered in dust and so rotted by mold that they crumble at his touch, he becomes outraged, yet his anger arouses no emotion from the Eloi.

  • I thought I had seen it all when one day, I saw a young woman riding a horse while talking on her cell phone. This happened in my hometown!...................Liz

I get so tired of seeing people with their noses buried in their stupid phones (and now tablets) People can't walk through a parking lot with trying to read the phone while completely oblivious to everyone around them. What gets me about the tablets is everyone screams about what a great device they are for productivity and all I ever see is people playing games.

Plus driving while yakking/texting. It should be a primary offense. That would solve a lot of state budget woes.

I've seen War Horse twice. First movie--guy across the aisle from me flipped open his phone in a darkened theater to read a text. He had it open for about 2-3 minutes.

2nd time seeing War Horse the people in front of me got a call. Their phone rang loudly! He took the call and then took a text message. Then he handed the phone to his gf/wife who had it flipped open for almost 10 minutes. WHHHHHYYYYYY!

I remember a teen brat being astounded when I told her that when I was in college if someone was late to a group meeting you had to go to their dorm and call from a pay phone. Back then nobody had cell phones and we survived.

  • Can't stand it when people use their phones in the movies. It just shows such a lack of respect for everyone else. Yet if you ask them to put it away they get angry about it. . . UncleJJJ
  • We went to a movie over the holidays and I was surprised to see someone from the theater come in a few times during the movie and discreetly walk the perimeter and scan the audience. I suspected they might have been checking to make sure there were no cell phones in use. ~i&b
  • There is a theater here with a no phone using policy. / Sapphire
