Additional Comments: After nearly 30 years of off & on & "almost." I finally decided to go completely vegan. I couldn't be happier with this decision. The documetary Forks Over Knives helped me with the push I needed to JUST DO IT!!

Ate some great food over the weekend. I survived my first dinner at a restaurant since making the vegan switch. I had the salad bar which had many great offerings including beets & a curried garbanzo bean salad. I skipped the soup (bean & bacon) but had a slice of the whole wheat loaf of bread they brought to the table. I washed it down with an O'Douls non-alcohol beer & I was stuffed by the time I left the restaurant. I dragged my juice machine out last week & have been juicing up a storm! Last week, I drank a lot of carrot/apple/lemon juice. Yesterday, I made juice with purple & green grapes, celery, cucumber & lemons. Today, I used parsley, swiss chard, ginger root, granny smith apples, cucumber & lemons. I dumped the pulp in my garden. I work out of town, so will bring both bottles of juice with me to enjoy throughout the week. I made some hummus earlier today & I bought some lentils to make Imjadra. For those who aren't familiar with this, it's a Lebanese dish made from lentils, bulgar wheat & onions. My ex was Lebanese & he used to make this for me. I love it! Thinking about Fattoush as well. It's been a long time since I had that. Foods of the Mediterranean are my fave foods of all time. I found some rice based "cheese" at the local health food store, in addition to soy sour cream. Thought that might be nice on a bean burrito or veggie chili. I tried the cheese & it's different but not bad. No, I don't think I'm going to starve to death!

  • Your meals sound tasty! Does your local health food store have organic produce and organic bulk items? I would never get a juicer because digestion begins in the mouth... so I cook food just until it's done, and chew it well to help get all the nutrients. Today I unfortunatly overcooked my dinner, but I ate it anyway. ..passin' through
  • Actually, our local Safeway has some organic produce & lots of bulk organic grains, flour, cereal, etc... Take a look at ''fat, sick & nearly dead'' juicing is actually really good for you & I love the taste of all the different fruits & veggies mixed together. I'm not interested in doing a juice diet, but am doing it for more variety....................Liz
  • non alchoholic beer??? Are you crazy??!! Now you have gone too far. Non alchoholic beer is a sin.

Fish and chicken are low in cholesterol and fat, so why not eat fish and chicken?

Also, I wonder what the health benefits, (if any), of processed frozen dinners are. I used to eat a lot of Amy's frozen dinners. Now I just prepare food from scratch. I eat steamed vegetables; a dish with lentils, split peas, millet, and rice; azuki beans; and oatmeal.

There is a Whole Foods where I live, but my local supermarket has organic produce and organic bulk items, so that's where I usually shop.

The tips of my fingernails started breaking off, which I read is caused by protein deficiency. I was eating way too many Amy's frozen dinners. I had eaten a lot of fish, but it wasn't enough protein. I then ate a lot of chicken. Now I'm preparing my organic plant-based food from scratch. I occasionally eat fish.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I don't want to eat chicken or fish. My dinner last evening consisted of a vegetable medley with a soy based ''chicken'' breast. 14 grams of protein combined & it was delicious. I eat Amy's on occasion. Not that often & like with everything else, you MUST read labels. A lot of Amy's dinners have milk in them. My Boca veggie burgers have 17 gm protein per burger. I've been making my own hummus for years. Garbanzo beans are also loaded with protein & you can add a little fat with the tahini that makes it taste so good. Sound like you eat very healthy!....................Liz
  • I have always read labels carefully. I have eaten a lot of veggie burgers, but they're processed food, just like Amy's frozen dinners. I used to get the frosen dinner that had fake meatloaf, until I realized that the honey in the dinner came from bees, so it was an 'animal' product. If you prepare hummus from scratch, at least you're getting vitamins. ..passin' through

  • Charles Manson was a vegan too.
  • LOL! ...........Liz
  • I've heard rumor that Hitler was also vegetarian. Jeffery Dahmer ate people. Not sure if Bundy drank milk or ate meat. Ed Gein made lampshades & women's clothing out of the skins of his victims. Something tells me that John Gacy was a carnivore......................Liz
  • yes, Hitler was indeed a vegetarian. he may have been a vegan.

Just out of pure curiosity what prompted you to make the decision, health, the animal thing or other?

Incidentally, humans are the only mammal who continues drinking milk for life. The weird part IMO..we drink another mammals milk and don't think anything odd!

I hardly eat meat at all but vegan is too much learnin' for me.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Try going vegetarian. It is much healthier, and more natural.
  • Drinking cows milk is not natural at all - Pronoun
  • I don't drink it because it makes me ill but apparently is very healthy for you and is good for your bones. If it was completely unatural it wouldn't have any benefits to humans. I really cannot stand the self righteousness of vegans. They really do look down on people who do not choose their lifestyle. I see nothing wrong with being a vegetarian.
  • Almond milk, rice milk, hemp milk etc. are better for you and all have calcium and Vitamin D added just like regular milk. If milk was good for people then there wouldn't be so many people who were lactose intolerant. Drinking milk from animals is not natural. If anything then people should drink human milk (ICK) - Pronoun
  • I haven't drunk milk in several decades. I drank it by the gallon as a kid but went off it for some reason in my 20s. I still ate cheese, ice cream & yogurt. I have now made the switch to soy or other plant based versions of these foods. Even tried Silk coffee creamer which was fantastic. Last March, after a femur fracture & horrible 16 day hospital stay, I developed blood clots in both lungs, pneumonia, a septic knee & liver failure. After a grueling 4 month recovery, my cholesterol jumped from always good to downright scary! I don't know if it was the insult to the liver that contributed to it or not. The doocumentary ''Forks over Knives'' really helped me make the decision after hearing the testimonials & the data that backed everything up. This was a decades long study. So in answer to your question; I am doing this for my health.....................Liz
  • Hmm, good point. I haven't drank milk in years because I'm just lactose intolerant. I get sick to my stomach if I drink milk but I can still eat cheese and eat ice cream. I don't need to eat meat. I believe it to be unhealthy and I feel sad about the way the animals are treated but that is a different story and I will not push my views on others. I still enjoy dairy products and always will and they are good for you as been proven.
  • Actually, the milk protein casein has been linked to cancer. Hormone tainted milk has been linked to precocious puberty. The only critters who require cow's milk are baby cows.........Liz

Good for you, Liz! I know it took some doing, but you made that transition. I've also contemplated going vegan or, at the very least, vegetarian. I've eaten red meat and pork only a handful of times over the last 20 years. Every year during Lent, hubby and I do the Daniel Fast, which is in essence a vegan diet. But those 40 days was a struggle for me, since I work in a profession that requires lots of physical energy (pre K teacher). I would bottom out.

If there was a way for me to go vegan without feeling like I am going to pass out, I would do it in a heartbeat. I've been having some GI issues and know being a vegan would help.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • A lot of people are deficient in B12 (not just vegans) maybe you should get that checked out because it should never make you feel that way. There are a lot of vegan athletes - Pronoun
  • There is a reason she felt like she was going to pass out going vegan. A lot of vegans pass out, it is very common. They want you to think it is the healthiest thing in the world when it fact they're probably some of the unhealthiest people. They lack certain things the body needs to function properly. They also tend to look down on others for not being a vegan, even vegetarians.
  • The last part meant they even look down on vegetarians which they do.
  • That's a bunch of crap Hollykins, read about Juliana Sproles, recently crowned the worlds toughest woman who is VEGAN and I could list lots of other elite athetes. Why are you so against people being Vegan anyway? - Pronoun
  • And I don't look down on anybody except stupid misinformed people - Pronoun
  • I'm not against people being vegan I am against vegans trying to tell other people how to live and calling people murderers because they enjoy dairy products. A lot of them think their way is the right way and everyone else is wrong or ''misinformed''. People tell meat eaters their way is unhealthy(which it is) and they don't get all mad about it.
  • I know a lot of vegans and they never look down on vegetarians or even meat eaters. Mostly because we were all vegetarians and meat eaters ourselves. That is like a racist comment, saying because you know of some vegans who do that you brand all vegans the same. I personally applaud anyone who is vegetarian, I am not a complete vegan myself. - Pronoun
  • This thread was not intended to become an animal rights rant. I've already said I have not gone vegan because of animal rights. I'm doing this for my health......................Liz
  • Good luck with whatever your decision is, Peaches! We all have to make the decision on what is right for us individually. It sounds like you could easily eliminate meat from your diet if you rarely eat it anyway. I would recommend you watch the documentary ''Forks Over Knives.'' I also have the book. Good luck!................Liz

Way to go Liz! I myself am almost vegan. Occassionally I will have a piece of cake or cookie if someone offers but never at home. At home we are vegan.  Was vegetarian for about 25 years but after learning about how dairy cattle and their little calves (veal) are treated I can no longer be part of that not to mention the horrendous life of chickens.  If people go vegan for health reasons I'm all for it.  Congratulations

Thank you to those who posted positive, encouraging comments! I tried going vegan 28 years ago but it was too difficult living where I do & not having the dietary education that a huge decision like this takes. I have studied nutrition for over 30 years. It has always been a passion of mine. I've eaten vegan off & on for many, many years & have tried lacto-ova & pesca vegetarianism & even ate poultry for the past 10 years. I am SO ready for this lifestyle change. Some examples of what I have eaten this past week include:

Blueberry muffins made with oat flour, mashed sweet potatoes & bananas.

falafel with sliced tomatoes, avocado, pepperoncini & homemade tofu mayonnaise (that tasted so much better than I expected).

Kashi berry cereal with almond milk.

    butternut & sweet potato soup.

    hummus & pita with veggies.

    stir fried tofu & veggies.

    Nuts

And my favorite Soy Dream Maple nut ice "cream"

I have an Amy's roasted vegetable pizza without cheese in the freezer, Kashi frozen Mayan bake, soy crumbles & "chicken" cutlets. I have tried all of these dishes in the past & already know I like them. I also bought some soy cheese slices. It is SO easy to eat this way now. All grocery stores sell great varieties of vegan foods. I also pulled my juicer out of the cupboard, dusted it off & have been enjoying carrot, lemon, apple, celery juice!

Congratulations, Liz, on doing something you've been wanting to do. I've been vegetarian for 39 years but somehow never made the next step. My daughter, two granddaughters, and I are all vegetarian; we are the healthiest people around, but I've always been hesitant about going vegan mainly because of what I imagined would be the work involved. I would be interested in your journey. Have you thought about creating a blog? You can make a free one with Google and it's fun to do. That's too extreme. Your body needs certain proteins and calcium. You're probably going to wear your body down. A lot of these vegans are just so sickly all the time. It's an unnatural diet. You're denying your body what it needs. I am trying to go vegetarian and would like to some day, it's really hard since I grew up on meat. I already elimated pork from my diet. Please rethink this extreme form of dieting.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I noticed how my comment got skipped while everyone else got a response. I wasn't trying to be mean. I was just saying I don't think this diet is all healthy. I have done research on it so I do know what I'm talking about. You can look it up if you don't believe me. A lot of vegans are sickly and get light headed because they do not get the nutrients they need. A lot of them cannot function properly. It's all there if you do your research.
  • I guess you know a lot of sickly vegans? I don't know any sickly vegans. Perhaps the sickly vegans you know should have done their research more carefully. This is a lifestyle that should not be entered into without a lot of planning & thought. Thank you for your comments. Your opinion has been noted......................Liz

I've been a vegetarian (but not vegan) for over 25 years.  Once I made the decision, I never looked back.  It really opened up a whole new world of foods that I may not have discovered otherwise.

Both vegetarianism and veganism are on the rise.  It's surprising to learn some of the people who have switched to v-diets (Bill Clinton -- Mr. Cheeseburger himself -- has been a vegan for several years now).  I wish you good luck with your new lifestyle!

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Yes but there is a big difference between vegans and vegetarians. The vegan lifestyle is dangerous. It's about as dangerous as people who eat red meat all the time. It's way too extreme. How is your body supposed to get it's proper amount of calcium and vitamins found in dairy protects? Taking a ton of vitamins everyday?
  • Hollykins, veganism is not dangerous if you educate yourself about nutrition. For instance, are you aware that dark green plants contain calcium? Or that edamame and certain other soy-based foods are fiber rich, cholesterol and saturated fat-free sources of protein? It's like anything else in life, you just have to learn about it and do it right. ~i&b
  • Yes I know but are they getting enough? They would have to eat a ton of beans and other things to get the proper amount of protein and calcium you can get from dairy. Why is it then that every vegan I know seems so sickly all the time? It's because they are not eating enough and denying their bodies what it needs. It's unnatural. I don't support it.
  • As I said before, one has to learn about proper nutrition before becoming a vegetarian or vegan. Obviously, your sickly vegans friends did not do that. It sounds like you could stand some education in that area as well. The American Diatetic Association endorses ''appropriately planned'' vegetarian and vegan diets and points out their nutritional advantages, including low levels of saturated fat and cholesterol. When done correctly, it is a much healthier way of eating than the standard American diet. ~i&b
  • That's just a pain and it eliminates all the good foods such as ice cream and cheese. Vegetarian is the way to go not vegan. It's a lot more natural and convienient.
  • This isn't about convenience. Besides, the grocery stores have many convenient vegan offerings these days in the deli & frozen foods sections. People can find convenient at the McDonald's drive thru.................Liz
  • Vegans are way healthier and to say they are sickly is crazy. I know several vegans and they are far from sickly. Cow's milk is meant for baby cows to drink not humans. Lots of athletes are vegans including the Williams sisters. If you want to live a compassionate healthy life and care about the planet then vegan is the way to go. - Pronoun
  • I don't drink milk because it makes me sick. Veganism is way too extreme, and it's just unhealthy and unnatural. People need calcium and vitamins provided by dairy product, it's a proven fact. You can lead a plenty healthy and compassionate life by being vegetarian. A lot of vegans are just so sickly because they're lacking all the vitimins and proteins that they need.
  • You are completely wrong Holykins and obviously have never researched the subject or ever tried it. - Pronoun
  • I have researched the subject many times and it is ridiculous. These people are malnourished.
  • Well show me some data then. Because I can certainly give you reams of links that show the truth and not your crazy ramblngs. On second thought, don't bother, you only come here to argue and not for intelligent discussion - Pronoun
  • Why is it unless you say ''I agree'' you're arguing?

I hope this works for you but keep in mind..the body still needs fat . I heard something about the late Linda McCartney..totally into a veggan diet and she still got cancer..that's how she lost her life. The human body still needs meat.

I found something to keep my weight down.."Apple Cider Vinegar Plus Pills" from :"Swanson's double strength..cost $1.79 a bottle for 120 pills..I found my miracle. I also cut salt from my diet..to me, salt was toxic to my system. I get their catalog in the mail..Swanson's Health Products.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • No need to worry, Glitter. There are still sufficient fats in a vegan diet. ~i&b
  • Like what? They can't have any cookies, cakes because it's made with egg, no ice cream.... The only thing I can think of is pop, or I guess they can have dark chocolate. What else?
  • For starters, there's nuts, oils, olives, avocadoes -- even corn, bok choy, and cauliflower contain fats and the list goes on. You really should learn more about nutrition before becoming vegetarian. ~i&b
  • I know but it's not enough fat. Again you would have to eat a ton of it to get the proper amount of fat your body needs. That is one of the reasons it is unsafe. Sure you can get fats and protein but you have to have a lot of a certain food and often they don't do that. A lot of them starve themselves.
  • Linda McCartney died of breast cancer DESPITE a vegan diet but not because of it. It's likely she had a family history which is your biggest risk factor. As for the fat issue. There are plenty of plant based foods to get necessary, unsaturated fats from. Plant based milks are calcium fortified & as ingy noted, dark leafy vegetables contain calcium...Liz
  • But you have to eat a lot of them to get the proper amount of fat your body needs. I would not recommend this extreme diet to anyone.
  • Read some food labels before you going shooting off your mouth about an issue you apparently know nothing about.......................Liz
  • Apparently you don't know anything either. If you did you would know how unatural of a diet this is. I'm almost vegetarian now and I feel super healthy. If went vegan I would be starving myself and depriving myself of the proper nutrients. My experience, vegans tend to think they're better than other people. I wouldn't want that label either.

  • I doubt she'll ''starve'' ... I tried it for a couple of years, and it was fine .... Ricky
  • Why aren't you doing it now if it's so great?
  • Because it was too much trouble for me, since I'm a bit lazy .... Like most Americans, I'm basically a lazy pig who finds myself at McDonald's more often than I should gobbling a Big Mac, which is utter junk but it's easy and convenient. I just don't have the discipline to do vegan properly .... Ricky
