How do you feel about the current state of daytime television?  I know our Young and the Restless is safe for a couple more years, but it seems like most of daytime television, in fact television in general is not worth watching anymore.  Hubby has been complaining about our $110.63/month Directv bill for some time.  I told him this week that as soon as One Life to Live ends this coming Friday I'd be fine with dropping Directv all together.  I can get my CBS soaps on our little outside antenna and that's about all I really care to regularly watch.

What are your feelings about the new reality or talk shows?  Personally, any show that has replaced a cancelled soap will never get watched by me.

I am not home during the day throughout the school year, so this is a non-issue for me most of the time.  However, on holidays and ill days, I might tune into a cooking show or the news.  I find daytime tv to be pretty skimpy.  However, I am equally unimpressed with prime time tv as well.  Aside from a few shows that I make sure to tune into, the rest seems to be reruns and reality tv.  I have enough reality in my life as it is.

I rarely watch TV during the daytime. Maybe if I'm folding laundry .. I'll flick on Barefoot Contessa or Giada at Home, to see what they're cooking. Or perhaps if I'm sitting down to eat a sandwich at lunchtime, I'll watch I Love Lucy or the noon news. But that's about the extent of it. Once I weaned myself off of The Young and the Restless .. I realized how liberating it was to not HAVE to watch something on television.

I'm the same way with evening TV. We'll watch the news, maybe a sporting event if it's something good, reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond, or if I'm home alone I enjoy the stuff on HGTV. The only thing I look forward to is American Idol...and the fact that it's a temporary show is a beautiful thing. I tune in, I get addicted, then it ends. Perfect!

  • Everybody Loves Raymond is a good show to watch. My absolute favorite is when Deborah was going to bake a turkey and slipping, sliding around dropped it on the floor. When she picked it up and slung it in the oven, I was howling with laughter. - Cache
  • LOL! Yes, that is a funny one. I think my favorite is when Ray sees Robert's date eat a dead fly at their dinner table. Nobody believes Ray, until Robert goes back to the girl's apartment and he realizes she thinks she's a frog, has a bazillion frogs in aquariums in her bedroom, etc. It's SO funny! ................................... • How about when they were tasting the Tofu turkey? ELR is one of the most consistently funny shows ever made.Too bad Ray's show Men of a Certain Age failed. Ray can act in addition to being a comic.. S'mom

Other than the noon news and Y&R I don't watch daytime TV.  I've never gotten involved in the other soaps, talk shows, and other daytime fare.  When Leo was little I used to enjoy watching some of his kid shows with him.  When I'm home I'd rather turn on some music than watch TV.  I keep hearing that soaps are a dying breed so when Y&R finally goes off the air I don't plan to replace it with anything else.

  • I'm just like you, Peridot. My grandson gave me a Pandora Radio subscription for Christmas in 2010. I love it and have it on quite often. - Cache

I never even have the tv on during the day - and often don't put it on at night - just depends on what's happening. I read a lot, cook a lot, garden, and have hobbies, so I seldom watch tv. I don't know who anyone is in the magazines at the checkout. So, I don't even know what's on tv in the daytime.

  • LOL! Most people on the covers of checkout magazines.... we don't want to know. - Cache

I seldom watch daytime TV. Occasionally something on HGTV or perhaps a movie. But mostly I listen to talk shows on NPR or listen to a book.

  • I used to listen to books while I quilted. Kind of soothing. - Cache

I hate when I get drawn in by daytime tv. It's usually a total waste of time and I get angry for watching when I could be doing something worth while. Sometimes I DVR and if there isn't anything on at nite I'll watch, but it usually last a few minutes and I delete it. Lot's of $$$$$ for Direct tv and VERY little worth while !!!!! I need warm weather to get outside and garden or just take a walk. Live in NY in the suburbs , winter is just too cold and too long , so far this winter has been a breeze, it's 43 degrees today ! No snow !

  • I agree, Directv is a wasteland of infomercials and junk not worth our time. - Cache
