Topic: Hypothetical question about the distant future

Additional Comments:

In 2500 AD, mankind leaves Earth for a new home planet. Earth is stripped of all traces of human civilization and is given 10,000 years to "recover."

You lead the homecoming space expedition that will start recolonizing on the recovered Earth.

Your job is to establish the first three colonies on the newly pristine Earth. What three places on the planet would you establish the colonies? (10,000 residents at each one).

Enjoyed all your replies. If MD posters have control of the future, we'll definitely be resort-minded in 12,500 years!

My choices would be based on climate, availability of water, and landmass for growth of future generations.  I'd suggest a settlement spread over the area that we now know as Southern France/Spain/over into the Mediterranean. The second, I'd place in the Southern USA area. And the third, in Australia.

I was going to say Hawaii, then a place that's cold like Alaska and then a place that I would consider exquisite to live: Greece.

Guess I'm too late in my responses, huh? LOL

All of these are based on climate.

Hawaii  (with a backup plan for spillage over of folks to Napa Valley region of California - - if it gets too populated for the confinements of the Hawaiian Islands)

Austria (scenic, central Europe, so there's plenty of elbow room if it starts to get crowded there)

New Zealand  (the peeps that end up here are on their own if they want to try to make it to Australia or wherever...but I doubt they'd ever want to leave such a gorgeous place)

  • With you, CG and Ingy, the Hawaiian islands are popular with the colonial planners! farmer

I would choose someplace with a moderate climate. since I have not been all that many places on this earth my choices could be better I am sure.
Perhaps someplace in the southern midwest. The winters wouldn't be too cold yet there would be 4 seasons. The soil is good for growing and there is plentiful water.
Someplace in Souther Spain. Again moderate climate and plenty of water.
And while I have never been to Hawaii I would say there just because it has to be one of the most beautiful spots. If not there then probably New Zealand.

I like Ingy's vacation spots; I'm going to make sure Earth 2.0 gets off to a good start.

I want to make sure each colony has lots of sustainable resources and has the best chance of thriving while waiting for the next wave of colonists to arrive. I'm assuming that in 12,500 years, advances in green energy and space travel will have made resource issues such as fossil fuels and most minerals obsolete.

Agricultural concerns, a good supply of fresh water and areas less prone to natural catastrophe would likely be of major importance, along a chance to study the ecology of their "new" home.

    My spots:

    1. Northwestern Mississippi, perhaps 10 miles or so away from the river since seasonal floods will be the norm again.

    2. The Basque region of Spain.

    3. Somewhere in the current wine-growing region of South Africa.
